We had a wonderful time reconnecting with the classes of 2009, 2014 and 2019 at our alumni reunion! From roles in clinical pharmacy, drug development, managed care and more, our alums are making waves across the pharmacy world.

We were also delighted to celebrate one of our exceptional alums, Rebecca Kandilian, Pharm.D., '14, who was named Distinguished Alumna of the Year due to her work creating several innovative ambulatory care specialty clinics as a drug education coordinator Kaiser Permanente. These locations were named best practice sites that now serve as models for the hospital’s other Southern California clinics.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!

Hearing from the communities we serve is essential to understanding their priorities and needs. Last week, joined by Health Sciences Vice Chancellor John Carethers, we toured three sites in southeastern San Diego to learn more about how we can strengthen and potentially expand our ongoing partnerships, including:

➡ The O’Farrell Charter School in Encanto, which serves a predominately Black, LatinX and Asian community and participates in our summer STEM program for underserved students (www.rmtlacademy.org)

➡ Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library in Emerald Hills, where our student groups frequently hold educational health events

➡ UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project in Normal Heights, a key training site for our pharmacy students that serves a primarily Spanish-speaking community. Our student-run free clinic project is one of the largest student-run free clinics in the nation.

We were honored to host The White House’s inaugural coalition on drug shortages at UC San Diego. The international summit brought together pharmaceutical industry leaders and government representatives from around the world to find new solutions to the growing global crisis of drug shortages.

“Drug shortages can feel intractable because there are multiple sources of the issue that span several countries,” said Dean Brookie Best, who provided opening remarks at the event. “However, one of the overarching conclusions of the meeting was that there are actions we can take today to solve drug shortages, so there was a common sense of hope in the room.”

Alum spotlight alert! Meet Kiana Keyvanjah, Pharm.D., ‘09, who currently works at Amgen as a medical director in early clinical development oncology.

We caught up with Keyvanjah to learn more about her work in drug development and how her time at our school prepared her for her current role. Read excerpts from the conversation below or read the full interview ➡ bit.ly/4fhDy0c

What is a typical day like for you?
I work in early drug development, which involves building the intricate bridge from preclinical research to the clinic, and then taking the first step across this bridge to bring new therapies to patients with unmet needs. I collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to create a plan for the clinical development of a new chemical entity, including identifying and selecting the populations who may benefit from that therapeutic option and designing the first-in-human study.

This is predominately a career pathway for medical doctors, but I work with medical professionals with different backgrounds such as Ph.D. scientists, physician-scientists and others. I believe as a Pharm.D. I offer a unique perspective to drug development and a wider lens for the multidisciplinary team.

What is the proudest moment of your career?
Getting accepted to pharmacy school! Another proud moment for me occurred shortly after I graduated. I wrote my first abstract to a congress, specifically the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This one of the largest clinical oncology conferences in the world and one which had an exceptionally high rejection rate for abstract submissions. The abstract I submitted not only was accepted but I received the 2010 ASCO Cancer Foundation Merit Award. I remember running my finger down the list of names of the recipients, and all were M.D. or M.D./PhD.’s. I was the only Pharm.D. fellow, and I was really proud of that for us!

Would you recommend UC San Diego to prospective pharmacy students?
Absolutely. This school is amazing and truly one of a kind. The seamless integration with the School of Medicine really gives students a strong foundation for a career in drug development. I’m often humbled when I reflect on the opportunities my training at UC San Diego has afforded me.

When you aren’t working, what do you do for fun?
I love to build LEGOs® with my kid, cook with my husband and spend time outdoors as a family.

Proud to share we are #7 in the nation for research funding based on a new report from American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy - AACP! Our faculty secured more than $34 million in grants from the Gates Foundation, National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other organizations.

“This impressive amount of grant funding, secured by a relatively small number of faculty, demonstrates the preeminence of our pharmaceutical scientists who are each experts in their respective fields,” said Dean Brookie Best. “Our diversity of funding sources also shows our ability to attract competitive funding and solve numerous urgent medical challenges through pharmaceutical science.”

Issued annually, the AACP report is a comprehensive list of total extramural-funded research awards received by U.S. colleges or schools of pharmacy based on public databases and direct collaboration with schools to ensure data accuracy.

“Our wide variety of funded projects each target a distinct and pressing area of human health,” said Elizabeth Winzeler, associate dean for research and innovation at the pharmacy school. “These projects will help fight malaria, protect the health of breastfeeding infants, uncover marine-based medicines and discover new drug-like compounds.”

Congratulations to all of our outstanding preceptors who received awards at our Annual Preceptor Excellence and Recognition Awards Program! We are so lucky to have so many talented and dedicated teachers across diverse practice settings to guide our students through their IPPE and APPE rotations (Note: Not all award winners are pictured).

Awards were based on student evaluations of preceptors, evidence of strong, sustained preceptorship of our students and support of our experiential program.

The program began with an educational session on growth mindset, designed to help our preceptors foster this valuable skill in our students. Then our award-winning preceptors were honored with short speeches from our faculty describing their outstanding achievements.

Cover star! A new Science Signaling study from and UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers reveals the cause of a cellular miscommunication involving GPCRs—targets of around 34% of all U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs—and made the cover of the journal.

The discovery has implications for the development of new therapies for a number of conditions, including cancer, and may shed light on the origin of many human diseases.

Viva Las Vegas! We had a wonderful time at the Western Pharmacy Exchange last week, the largest west coast experience for all pharmacy professionals.

Nearly 40 of our students attended the conference, presenting posters, participating in the annual quiz bowl, networking and enjoying a SSPPS reception at Gordon Ramsay Burger in Planet Hollywood.

Dean Brookie Best, faculty member Nathan Painter and numerous preceptors also enjoyed supporting our students while onsite, connecting with alumni and facilitating networking opportunities.

A major congratulations to preceptor Chris Woo on his induction into the prestigious California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals who are an inspiration to the practice of pharmacy in California, and receipt of the Bowl of Hygiea award, which honors pharmacists who have dedicated their lives to the profession of pharmacy in California. We are so grateful our students are able to learn from your expertise!

Congratulations as well to our APhA-ASP/CPhA student group which was named a chapter of excellence.

We’re already looking forward to WPE 2025, which will be held in our home town of San Diego!
