Dear students, alumni, friends, and family of TASA,
The Taiwanese American Student Association stands in solidarity with the Black community. The tragic events involving the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other innocent Black people should never be forgotten. As a student organization that is a part of the UCSD community, we must leverage our wide-spreading voice as a platform to vocalize how and why we need to bring change to a world of racial injustice, bigotry, and police brutality. These injustices brought upon the Black community by the system America was built on should not be ignored. This is systematic inequality, an ugly and cruel facet of our country and society, something that has long taken root within the systems of our nation.
We must take action to change the status quo. We must seek to inform those around us of the oppression of the Black community so that we can build a brighter future—a future where no person, regardless of their race, should ever have to worry about leaving their house. We must not be complacent in this time of need. If we do not bear the responsibility for solving this problem, we are only allowing it to grow in magnitude and severity. We must actively support the Black community in these times instead of only offering our sympathy and condolences from our safe positions. We must educate those close to us about the current situation, and we must not hesitate to make difficult conversations with our friends and family in order to raise awareness. The only way to guarantee a tolerant and fair society is to never allow intolerance and prejudice to fester and spread.
To show our support as an organization, TASA will be matching donations up to $500 for the organization of your choosing. Just venmo -tasa the amount you would like to donate and the organization name and a receipt will be sent to you as proof. Resources for different organizations to donate to will be linked below. If you wish to donate but cannot decide on an organization to donate to, you can venmo -tasa and your contribution will be doubled and donated to the Equal Justice Initiative.
