15 Golf Mantras That Can Transform Your Mental Game
By Dr. Barry Lotz, J.D., Ph.D., PGTAA Master Teaching Professional
Most golfers spend countless hours working on their golf swing, yet very few dedicate the same effort to training the six inches between their ears.
The reality is simple: golf is played as much with the mind as it is with the body.
One of the most effective mental-game tools I have used with PGA TOUR players, elite amateurs, and PGTAA students over the years is the golf mantra—a short, positive phrase that helps direct attention, quiet mental clutter, and reinforce confidence.
A mantra is not wishful thinking. It is a deliberate mental cue that keeps your focus where it belongs: on the process, not the outcome.
When used consistently, these mantras become part of your pre-shot routine and help you perform with greater clarity, confidence, and consistency.
What Is a Golf Mantra?
A golf mantra is a brief statement you repeat to yourself before or during a shot to maintain focus and emotional control.
Instead of allowing your mind to wander toward hazards, score, mechanics, or consequences, a mantra gives your brain one simple, productive task.
The best mantras are:
Positive
Present tense
Simple
Action-oriented
Easy to remember under pressure
How to Use Golf Mantras
The key is not merely thinking positive thoughts.
The key is attaching a mantra to your routine.
Use a mantra:
Behind the ball during visualization.
As you walk into the shot.
During pressure situations.
After mistakes.
Before important putts.
Repeat the mantra, take a breath, trust your preparation, and execute.
Here are fifteen of my favorites.
1. Relax, Focus, Commit, Execute
This is my signature performance mantra.
Every great shot begins with relaxation. Focus directs your attention. Commitment eliminates doubt. Ex*****on allows your body to perform freely.
Simple. Powerful. Effective.
2. I Am Prepared for This Moment
Confidence is built through preparation.
This mantra reminds you that today's performance is supported by yesterday's practice.
3. One Shot at a Time
Golf becomes overwhelming when you think about the next nine holes, your score, or the tournament result.
Stay with the shot directly in front of you.
4. Trust What You Brought Today
You do not need a perfect swing.
You only need to trust the swing that showed up today.
5. Let the Routine Hit the Shot
Great players rely on their routine rather than their emotions.
Your routine is your anchor under pressure.
6. See It. Feel It. Swing It.
Create a clear mental picture, feel the motion, and let the swing happen naturally.
Visualization creates intention.
7. I Can Execute This Shot
Doubt creates tension.
Belief creates freedom.
This mantra reinforces your ability to perform when it matters most.
8. Calm Mind, Free Swing
The best golf swings occur when the mind is quiet and uncluttered.
A calm mind allows athletic motion to emerge naturally.
9. Pressure Is a Privilege
Pressure means the moment matters.
The opportunity to feel pressure means you are competing for something worthwhile.
Embrace it.
10. My Response Defines Me
Every golfer hits poor shots.
The difference between good players and great players is how quickly they recover.
Your response is always within your control.
11. Stay Curious, Not Critical
Judgment narrows your thinking.
Curiosity expands your options.
Ask yourself: "What is this situation asking me to do?"
12. Commit to the Target
Indecision destroys performance.
Choose the target, trust the decision, and swing without hesitation.
13. Breathe Through Your Eyes
One of my favorite mental-performance concepts.
Softening your visual focus while breathing deeply helps reduce tension and slows racing thoughts.
14. Adapt, Adjust, Overcome
Weather changes.
Lies change.
Conditions change.
Great golfers adapt rather than complain.
15. The Next Shot Is My Best Opportunity
The previous shot is history.
The next shot is possibility.
Every shot gives you a fresh opportunity to perform at your highest level.
Create Your Own Personal Mantra Card
I encourage every golfer to carry a small "Mantra Card" in their yardage book.
Choose:
One confidence mantra.
One routine mantra.
One adversity mantra.
One target-focused mantra.
Practice them on the range until they become automatic.
When pressure arrives, your mind will naturally return to these familiar thoughts instead of wandering toward fear, doubt, or frustration.
Remember, golf is not about eliminating mistakes.
It is about responding to challenges with clarity, confidence, and commitment.
Train your mind as diligently as you train your swing, and you will discover what the best players have known all along:
The right mind produces better golf.
PRESSURE IS PERSONAL: WHY SOME GOLFERS THRIVE WHILE OTHERS STRUGGLE
How much does pressure affect your golf game?
Most golfers have experienced standing over a putt, tee shot, or approach shot that suddenly feels much more important than usual. The heart rate rises. The hands feel different. Thoughts begin to race.
Yet some golfers seem to perform better when the pressure is highest.
Why?
At the PGTAA, we teach that pressure is not created solely by the situation. It is largely created by how you perceive the situation.
In other words, pressure is personal.
Competitive pressure is the psychological stress golfers experience when facing meaningful situations and important outcomes.
The key word is meaningful.
Pressure only exists when the outcome matters to you.
Two golfers can play in the same tournament under identical conditions and experience completely different levels of pressure.
One golfer may be chasing his first Top-10 finish of the season and feel tremendous pressure. Another golfer may see the same situation as an exciting opportunity.
That's the first lesson about pressure:
Pressure is determined more by perception than circumstance.
Many golfers believe pressure comes from outside forces.
It doesn't.
Pressure comes from the meaning you attach to the moment.
A ten-foot putt during a practice round rarely creates anxiety.
The same putt on the final hole of a tournament can feel completely different.
What changed?
Only the significance attached to the outcome.
The greater the importance you place on the result, the greater the pressure becomes.
Pressure also creates physical responses.
Your heart rate increases.
Your breathing becomes faster.
Muscles tighten.
Your palms may sweat.
Many golfers immediately interpret these sensations as signs that something is wrong.
They tell themselves:
"I'm nervous."
"I'm losing control."
The problem is that this interpretation magnifies the symptoms.
Elite performers view the same sensations differently.
Instead of seeing anxiety, they see readiness.
Instead of viewing a racing heart as a problem, they view it as evidence that their body is preparing for an important moment.
The physical symptoms are often identical.
The interpretation is what separates strong performers from struggling performers.
Another contributor to pressure is the meaning you attach to success and failure.
If you believe one shot will define you as a golfer, pressure becomes overwhelming.
If you view that same shot as one moment in your golfing journey, pressure becomes easier to manage.
When your self-worth becomes attached to results, every shot feels like a test.
When you separate your identity from your score, you play with greater freedom and confidence.
A perfect example came when Joaquin Niemann defeated Talor Gooch in a playoff to win LIV Golf Korea.
Afterward, Niemann admitted he was nervous.
His heart rate increased.
The moment mattered.
But listen to how he interpreted the experience:
"I think my heart rate was a little bit up. I feel like it's just part of it. I just love this game. I love being in these moments."
That statement reveals the mindset of great competitors.
Niemann didn't try to eliminate pressure.
He accepted it.
He embraced it.
Because of that mindset, he stayed composed, trusted his preparation, and executed under pressure.
Many golfers spend their careers trying to avoid pressure.
The best players learn to welcome it.
Pressure is not evidence that something is wrong.
Pressure is evidence that something meaningful is happening.
It means you care.
It means you are invested.
The goal is not to eliminate pressure.
The goal is to develop a healthier relationship with it.
Three PGTAA Strategies for Managing Pressure
1. Focus on the Shot, Not the Outcome
Focus on the next shot.
Pick your target.
Commit.
Trust.
Execute.
2. Reframe Physical Symptoms
A faster heartbeat and extra energy don't mean something is wrong.
They mean something matters.
View them as signs your body is preparing you to compete.
3. Keep Golf in Perspective
No single shot, round, or tournament defines you.
The less your self-worth depends on one result, the more freely you'll play.
PGTAA Teaching Point
Pressure is not something that happens to you.
Pressure is something you interpret.
Change your interpretation, and you change your performance.
Relax. Focus. Commit. Execute.

Masters Tickets (Or at Least a Shot at Them)
Has your dad always dreamed of attending the Masters Tournament? If so, Father’s Day may be the perfect time to help make that dream a reality.
Each year, Augusta National conducts a lottery for Masters tickets, and applications for the 2027 tournament will be accepted from June 1 through June 20. Simply visit www.Masters.com , create an account, and submit a ticket application. While demand far exceeds supply, someone must win—and it could be you.
If selected, you'll be notified later in the summer and given the opportunity to purchase tickets at prices that are remarkably affordable compared to their market value. Like many things associated with the Masters, the experience is priceless, but the official ticket prices remain refreshingly reasonable.
A trip to Augusta National is more than a golf outing, it's a bucket-list experience that any golf-loving father would cherish forever.

NGF (National Golf Foundation) Short Game: The Record Rise of Female Golf
When it comes to post-pandemic participation gains in recreational golf, women and girls have outpaced their male counterparts and accounted for a greater share of growth.
Over the past six years (from 2020 to 2025), there has been a 45% rise in the number of on-course, female golfers. This participant pool has experienced a net gain of 2.5 million, climbing to more than 8.1 million in total, the highest count on record.
During that same six-year span, there’s been a corresponding 12% rise among the male golfer population – a net increase of 2.3 million players.
In total, women and girls have accounted for 52% of the net participation gains in green grass golf from 2020 to 2025. This shift has helped push female representation within the traditional golfer population to 28%, the highest proportion on record, and up from 20% in 2012.
What’s particularly interesting (at least for us at the NGF), is that the momentum of recent years has more than reversed the declines seen in the female participation ranks following the Great Recession. Consider that prior to the past two years, the highest number of on-course, female golfers was 7.1 million in 2006.
The economic downturn that occurred just under two decades ago was felt acutely in many industries, particularly a discretionary pursuit like golf. And the impact from a gender perspective was especially profound.
From 2007 through 2012, the number of on-course, female golfers dropped by 30%, a net decline of 2.1 million. On the men’s side, the net decline was greater (2.6M), but the comparable proportional change was only -11%. That gap is telling.
From an economic and sociological perspective, the recession disproportionately disrupted the time and spending of women for a number of reasons. Among them, more married women entered the U.S. workforce (per the Bureau of Labor Statistics) as many households sought to compensate for lost income, and females disproportionately absorb a greater share of family responsibilities, whether household or childcare, during times of economic stress.
Female participation levels began to recover after 2012, but the real rise in engagement was accelerated more recently by the pandemic… and by new forms of off-course helping provide greater access and lower the game’s intimidation factor.
Today, women and girls not only make up a higher proportion of new golfers, including beginners and returners, they also have greater representation among off-course only participants and among non-golfers who are interested in playing on a course.
The critical component for continued industry health is ensuring those women and girls who have discovered (or rediscovered) golf in recent years become committed. Welcoming environments and programming would support this, both on and off the course, as do targeted equipment, instruction and apparel.
