MIST Expedition alumnus, Soli Garcia, and his co-authors have their work represented in a competition put on by the NASA Earth Observatory. Tournament Earth 4.0 pits scientific images in a head-to-head bracket. Soli's work is entered as " #2 - Seafloor Features Are Revealed by the Gravity Field." The use of gravity and multibeam sonar, as used on the MIST Expedition, are complementary methods for mapping the seafloor.
Here's hoping for lot's of votes for Soli.

Hey, a photo from the MIST Expedition is in the running for inclusion in the Scripps 2015 Science Calendar!
A core liner is ready to be deployed to the seafloor for sediment sampling. This
photo was taken on the R/V Roger Revelle during a UC Ship Funds cruise led by
Diego Melgar and other SIO graduate students over the Ninety East Ridge in the
Indian Ocean. Photo: Emmanuel S. Garcia, graduate student

While the science team was out collecting samples of the ocean bottom, our mascot Albert was captured by a cup. When we discovered this crime we attached the kidnaping cup to the CTD and set it down to more than 4km below the surface! Check back to find out what happens to the cup.

A brief history of underwater acoustics: Part I
It’s amazing to think that while we can image individual stars and planets within galaxies millions of light years away (one light year equals x kilometers), we have only recently began imaging the topography of the seafloor that makes up ……
