This girl makes everything look so easy. No surprise that she’s the number one player in her class. Jason was working on separating the throwing motion from the spinning motion with her at her most recent lesson.
It’s the little things that make a big difference in performance…
We say hold weight in the elbow (on change ups) because it keeps energy away from the ball. This means we can’t also be putting effort into throwing the weight in the elbow forward or it turns into a lob pitch.
If you want to get the most out of the drive, the arms should meet up high in front of the body before they separate to throw.
Glove side extension break down. Keying in on the elbow drop so extension occurs in a line.
Here’s our secret about opening: Separation creates opening. Shoulder separation promotes forward motion and creates an open position without sacrificing efficiency. Turning into it can create the position, but stops forward motion. In order to turn, the player’s weight splits: half goes forward and half goes back. The open position is important for sure, but prioritizing the position over the motion that creates it, is a fatal flaw too many fall prey to. When players over emphasize this position, they miss out on prioritizing what creates the position. The hard part for us at PhM, is that they often get taught to prioritize the position from well meaning coaches that see a video of the position occurring without understanding how the position was created.
Just like upward dog in yoga… lifting the chin positions the hips forward for the leg to push them out.
