Hi friends,

Please see the following

Sara Carrión Anaya, a PhD student from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London (UCL), visited UC San Diego in May 2022. Sara is working on her dissertation project, "Early Ceramic Technologies and Traditions in the Edom Lowlands Region of Southern Jordan: A Diachronic Perspective", under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Quinn (UCL) and Dr. Margie Burton and Professor Tom Levy (UC San Diego). During her recent visit, Sara selected pottery samples for petrographic and chemical analysis from two sites in the Faynan region of southern Jordan: Bronze Age Khirbat Hamrat Ifdan and Iron Age Khirbat al-Jariyah. The sites had been excavated by UC San Diego and the Department of Antiquities of Jordan under the direction of Professor Tom Levy and Dr. Mohammad Najjar. By studying the composition and technological characteristics of the pottery, Sara's research aims to trace the evolution of pottery-making traditions and trade/exchange dynamics during a time frame marked by the rise of industrial-scale metallurgical production in the eastern Mediterranean. The project is part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN) "Training the next generation of archaeological scientists: Interdisciplinary studies of pre-modern Plasters and Ceramics from the Eastern Mediterranean (PlaCe)" funded by Europe's Horizon 2020, the EU Research and Innovation funding programme.

Hi friends,

Please see the exciting opportunity below!
Online Course: Introduction to Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage

Thursday evenings, 6-7:30pm (UK Time), 16th June-14th July 2022 plus recordings!

In this course, you will be on a journey across the oceans to learn more about how maritime archaeology investigates our changing relationship with the world’s water bodies. From the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean, and from the Nile River to the Thames, civilisation was and still is connected by water. By the end of this course, you will have a better understanding of what maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage are all about. Furthermore, you will be introduced to the latest research projects in the field in both Egypt and UK.
During this five-week course, you will gain an overall understanding of maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage. Connect with archaeologists working in the field by examining their careers and diving “virtually” into their sites, both underwater and in the middle of the desert. We will sail together on an exciting journey through times, understanding ancient mariners, how they’ve built their boats, prepared them, and navigated them to the farthest corners of the world. While in Egypt, we will examine boat burials and traditions related to boats and ships, both in ancient and modern Egyptian history. You will learn more about cutting edge technology in the field and get your hands on some three-dimensional models of ancient boats and ships. Finally, you will be introduced to traditional maritime communities in Egypt and how they are keeping these traditions alive for future generations to enjoy.
No prior knowledge of the topic is necessary for this course, it is accessible to any and everyone who has a passion to learn about Egyptian maritime heritage.

Hi friends,

Catalina Island – Camera and Dive Proficiency – March 21-23, 2022

Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology researchers Thomas Levy and Loren Clark traveled with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Science Diving Course (UC San Diego) to Catalina Island over March 21-23 to conduct proficiency dives and test out camera equipment used for photogrammetry. Two Sony Alpha cameras were taken and tested in one Nauticam and one Ikelite underwater housing by each diver. Seven dives were completed by the team and photos were taken to support the SIO Scientific Dive Course and to produce 4 3D models. These models will be provided to the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center directors for use in their research and operations. These training and proficiency dives will be important in conducting operations on future SCMA and Koret projects as all members of the dive team must be familiar with the methods of underwater photogrammetry.
