⭐ Body Language in Interviews: What You Signal Before You Speak

Ever leave an interview feeling like you said the right things — but still wonder how you came across?

After more than 30 years of hiring and interviewing professionals, I can tell you this:
interviews start communicating long before the first answer.

Your body language doesn’t replace strong answers — but it can quietly reinforce (or undermine) them.

Here’s what consistently matters:
✅ Posture
Sitting upright signals confidence and engagement — not stiffness, just presence.
✅ Eye contact
Natural, steady eye contact builds trust. You don’t need to stare; you need to connect.
✅ Responsive cues
A nod or brief smile shows you’re listening and processing, not just waiting to speak.
✅ Stillness
Excessive fidgeting often reads as nervousness, even when your answers are solid.

Strong body language isn’t about performing.
It’s about being grounded enough that your experience can land.

💬 What’s one body-language habit you’re more aware of in interviews now than earlier in your career?

RED Friday. Until they all come home.

Remember
Everyone
Deployed

Let's not forget all our troops home and abroad as they stand guard for our freedoms and the freedoms of others. A volunteer force of heroes, serving our country while we sit at home in safety and security.

Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you!

⭐ Interviewing After Years in One Role? Your Presence Still Speaks First
When you haven’t interviewed in a long time, dressing for one can feel surprisingly tricky.

Here’s the reality:
professional presence matters even more at this stage.

A few principles to rely on:

✅ Dress for the level you’re targeting
Your appearance should reflect where you’re headed, not where you’ve been.

✅ Err slightly on the side of formality
It’s easier to adjust down than recover from being underdressed.

✅ Aim for credibility, not flash
Clean, well-fitted, and appropriate keeps the focus on your experience.

Your goal isn’t to impress but to feel confident and let the conversation do the work.

💬 What feels most different about interviewing now compared to earlier in your career?

⭐ What You Wear to an Interview Is Part of Your Message
Ever feel unsure if you dressed “right” for an interview?

Here’s the reality, based on decades in leadership and hiring:
first impressions are formed before the first question is asked.

What you wear doesn’t get you the job but it can quietly work for or against you.

A few principles I consistently recommend:

✅ Dress for the role you’re aiming for, not the role you’re leaving
Your appearance should reflect readiness for responsibility.

✅ Aim one step above the company’s day-to-day dress code
It shows respect for the opportunity and awareness of context.

✅ When in doubt, choose professionalism
It’s far easier to dial things back than to recover from being underdressed.

Strong candidates don’t try to stand out through clothing.
They aim to look confident, credible, and appropriate so the focus stays on their experience and judgment.

💬 What’s your go-to rule when deciding how to dress for an interview?
