At State Road Elementary School, our second graders are learning that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Through the Kindhearted Kids project, students “adopt” a stuffed pet to help build responsibility, empathy, and care for others. This year, the learning grew even bigger through a partnership with the Coulee Region Humane Society.
Each student was paired with a real animal awaiting adoption and wrote heartfelt letters from the pet’s perspective to help the pet find a forever home. The kids researched animals, practiced writing skills, built confidence, and strengthened connections with their community.
Students shared their letters with volunteer Deb and her dog Belle before delivering them to the humane society. Deb also visits our schools regularly to read with students, showing how strong community connections help learning come alive for kids every day.
Projects like this help students grow into compassionate, responsible citizens who care for people, animals, their community, and themselves.
