Fifth graders fixing problems.
Last year some of the plants we started in the school dried out too quickly and wilted. With so many other activities going on in the school, it can hard to monitor seedlings and make sure they always get enough water. So this year fifth grade was tasked with creating their own unique potting soil blend that holds moisture better.
They explored different ingredients commonly used in potting soil mixes - where they come from, how they are typically harvested and processed, whether they are renewable resources - and were able to feel (and sometimes smell!) the different ingredients.
Then each group created their own potting soil recipe. We tested each recipe to see which one would hold water the best by filling a cup with a small drainage hole with their mixtures, pouring water into the cup, and timing how long it took each one to drain. The winning recipes are what we will use to start our seeds with next week.
Thanks fifth grade!
