La Crescent Montessori & STEM School

La Crescent Montessori & STEM School At LMSS, we offer free public school for K through 12th grade. The focus of La Crescent Montessori is based on the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori.

La Crescent Montessori & STEM School is a public Montessori school offering tuition free education for grades K-12, and private-pay pre-school for children ages 3 and 4. At La Crescent Montessori & STEM School (LMSS) we care about each and every one of our students, and think of our school as a community with each member responsible for the well-being of each other and the school. We are also prou

d to offer private pay Preschool for 3 & 4 year olds in our Children’s House environment. The Montessori philosophy is a hands-on approach to learning with specialized materials to aid students in understanding both simple and complex concepts.

Happy Birthday, Maria Montessori! 🎉

Born August 31, 1870, her ideas about children, learning, independence, and curiosity are still showing up in our classrooms every single day.

156 years later, we’re pretty grateful she decided there might be a different way to do school. ❤️

Happy birthday to the woman who started it all!

We’re still looking for one more person to join our team!

We have an incredible group of teachers in place, and we’re looking for a teaching assistant to work alongside them and support our students throughout the school day.

You don’t need to have Montessori experience. We’re looking for someone who enjoys kids, is dependable, willing to learn, and wants to be part of a really great school community.

If you’ve ever thought about working in a school, or know someone who would be a great fit, please reach out or share this with them!

We’d love to find the right person to round out our team for this school year.

Why mixed-age classrooms?

One of the beautiful differences in Montessori education is that students learn in mixed-age, three-year communities.

When a child enters a new level, they don’t just see what their teacher hopes they’ll become. They see it in the students beside them.

Our youngest students work alongside older peers who have already spent years growing in that classroom. They see their independence, confidence, academic skills, leadership, and responsibility. Those older students become natural role models and peer teachers, quietly giving younger students a picture of what they can grow toward.

And then, eventually, the youngest become the oldest. The learner becomes the leader.

This photo captures that cycle beautifully. Two of the youngest children in the classroom are embraced by one of the oldest. Years later, these three are together again in our adolescent program. The younger two once again have a familiar older peer beside them—someone who has been modeling what comes next since they were little.

That’s something special about growing up in Montessori. Children don’t just move through school together. They grow into new roles within a community.

Confidence grows through competence.

Research has found that after discussing their thinking with a peer, students become more accurate and more confident in their learning.

Moments like this are happening every day at LMSS. Children aren’t just completing assignments. They’re learning to think, communicate, and encourage one another.

Many of our students have loved being a part the La Crescent wrestling programs. There is still time to sign up for the youth camp next week!

It's uncanny how much better a kid gets at just about everything when they wrestle.

In a world full of convenience and opportunities to be sedentary, help your kids do the opposite and come wrestle.

Wrestling builds all, does not limit participation, but it will humble all.

Such a great concoction for a young person.
