The Department of Art Education at Kutztown University: Building Art Education Professionals for over 75 years.

The art education program at Kutztown University is one of the most highly regarded in the United States. Art education at KU consists of general studies courses, studio art courses, visual studies courses, and art education courses. In addition, student teaching and other hands-on clinical experiences enhance academic experience.

Day 4: People

We concluded the in-person portion of Artists as Partners in Pedagogy: Conversations in Making and Meaning with our final conversation: People.

The day began with a special live Zoom conversation with sculptor Steve Tobin, followed by an inspiring artist talk and Altar/Alter collage workshop led by Kara Mshinda. Through conversation, collage, and reflection, participants explored identity, memory, community, and the power of visual storytelling.

More than anything, this week reminded us that meaningful learning happens through relationships. Over four days, a group of educators became a true studio community, making, questioning, collaborating, and learning alongside four remarkable artists.

The conversations continue as participants move into the online portion of the institute, carrying these ideas into their own artistic practice and art rooms.

Day 3: Place

Our Artists as Partners in Pedagogy: Conversations in Making and Meaning institute took learning beyond the KU classroom today with a field study at Steve Tobin Studios and throughout Quakertown, PA.

Although Steve Tobin was unable to join us due to preparations for an upcoming exhibition, we were incredibly fortunate to learn from John Turan, Steve's master metal fabricator. John's stories and insights gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the collaborative process, craftsmanship, and problem-solving involved in creating large-scale sculpture.

The conversation continued over lunch at the historic McCoole's at the Red Lion Inn before participants explored downtown Quakertown, discovering how place, history, architecture, public art, and community can inspire artistic thinking and curriculum.

A wonderful day of observation, conversation, and connection!

Today our Artists as Partners in Pedagogy: Conversations in Making and Meaning institute continued with Conversation #2: Stories.

A huge thank you to textile designer and illustrator Veronica Miller Jamison for sharing her artistic journey and leading an inspiring hands-on printmaking and collage workshop. Even when technology didn't cooperate, Veronica reminded us that the most meaningful stories are often shared through conversation, artwork, and creative process.

Participants explored how artists collect, interpret, and communicate stories through images while experimenting with new techniques, taking creative risks, and learning alongside one another.

Day 1 of Artists as Partners in Pedagogy: Conversations in Making and Meaning is in the books!

Today we welcomed a wonderful group of art educators and artists to Kutztown University for our first conversation: Materials.

A special thank you to Liz Hamilton Quay for an inspiring artist talk and hands-on workshop that challenged us to think differently about materials, process, experimentation, and creative risk-taking. Participants explored soft sculpture techniques while engaging in meaningful conversations about the connections between artistic practice and pedagogy.

We are excited to continue the conversation tomorrow as we move from Materials to Stories with illustrator and author Veronica Miller Jamison.

Registration is open for the KU Art Education Department Summer Graduate Institute:
Artists as Partners in Pedagogy: Conversations in Making and Meaning

This year’s institute will include artist talks, workshops, and studio time with Liz Quay, Veronica Miller Jamison, and Kara Mshinda, along with a field trip to Steve Tobin’s studio.

Together, we will explore materials, memory, illustration, collage, sculpture, storytelling, community, and how artists’ practices can inspire meaningful curriculum.

Face-to-Face Institute: July 6–9 at Kutztown University
Online Course Component: continues through August 6

Participants may take the institute as a workshop experience or take it for graduate credit, which includes the online course component.

We were delighted to celebrate the accomplishments of our Art Education and Art Education Alternative Settings Graduates on this beautiful day. The commencement ceremony was superb, the hats were a notable feature, and the celebration in the Sharadin Art Education wing was fantastic. Congratulations!!!

From Story to Studio… and we’re not finished yet!

What an incredible start to Arts Day at Riverside Elementary! Thank you Ms. Quier!!!

Our Kutztown University art education students brought stories to life through thoughtful, creative, and engaging lessons that truly connected with young artists. From painting, collage, and shell art to storytelling and imagination, the energy in the room was inspiring.

Just as we were getting into the rhythm of the day, an unexpected early dismissal due to heat brought our afternoon session to a pause… but not an ending.

This is only Part 1.

We’ll be back on April 30th to continue what we started, and we cannot wait to see the rest of Our ARED 210’s student’s amazing lessons come to life.

So proud of our future art educators for their professionalism, flexibility, and heart. You made this day something special.
