This summer, Dang Nguyen, a Biochemistry major, interned at West Virginia University in the Tseytlin Lab and built a custom bioprinter from the ground up, including both hardware and software development. He used the system he built to print 3D bioconstructs to investigate spatial oxygen mapping. The goal of the research is to optimize bioprinting by providing information about oxygen distribution within printed constructs, with future applications in bioprinted tumor models for drug screening and therapy testing.

Indulge yourself in regional folk culture at the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center’s Heemet Fescht: a celebration of harvest and Pennsylvania Dutch farm life. Heemet Fescht features live music in the barnyard, traditional arts, barn star painting, folklife demonstrations, hayrides, pumpkin painting, and pot-bellied pigs!
Heemet (pronounced HAY-met), means “home” in Pennsylvania Dutch. Located on the historic Sharadin Farmstead at 22 Luckenbill Road, Kutztown, admission is free.

Dr. João Gallotti, Physical Scientist, U.S. Geological Survey
“This presentation will cover the journey that led to my career as a federal science researcher. I will share insights from my academic path and research experiences, highlighting how they shaped my interests and skills.”
Dr. João Gallotti is a Physical Scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), specializing in subsurface energy resources. He completed a master’s degree in Geoenvironmental Studies at Shippensburg University, where his fieldwork was based at the Chincoteague Bay Field Station and was co-advised by Dr. Adrienne Oakley at KU. He earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Science & Public Policy from George Mason University. At the USGS, Dr. Gallotti contributes to a national assessment of natural gas storage capacity in abandoned reservoirs and leads research on geochemistry and microbial processes in subsurface environments.
