This week with at It Takes A Village Homeschool Hybrid Community, our artists became creature designers by imagining species that had never existed, studying real animal structures and adaptations using what they observed to build something entirely original.

But the challenge went beyond drawing a fantastical animal. Each artist had to think about how their creature moved, where it lived and what made it uniquely suited to survive.

That’s where the real learning happened: taking an initial idea and developing it with intention, curiosity, and detail.

Next week will finish these pieces (stay tuned!) but we already love how they are coming out. Such incredible imagination!

We learned last week that communication is pretty easy and straightforward… until personalities, different communication styles, complicated messages, and middle-messengers get involved. 😏

The kids got a firsthand look at just how quickly communication can break down. They had to organize themselves by height, alphabetical order, and birthday month without being allowed to talk. Codes were attempted. Hand signals appeared. There was plenty of confusion. And somehow, they prevailed.

Then we played telephone with messages ranging from “blue” to “elephants are cute” to a favorite birthday memory that started as “cake pop” and somehow became simply… “cupcakes.” 😂

But one of our favorite parts of the night was digging into types of communication. We looked at passive, aggressive, and assertiveness then created skits around real-life situations: someone accidentally takes your lunch, or someone cuts you in line. Watching the kids exaggerate all three responses was hilarious and demonstrated just how much they grasped the concepts.

The magic was in the conversation afterward: How can you stand up for yourself without steamrolling someone else? What does it actually look like to be clear, confident, and kind?
These are leadership skills, but they’re also life skills.

And now we’re moving into WEEK 3: COLLABORATION.

Leadership isn’t about controlling a group but rather creating the conditions for everyone to contribute. Our challenges will focus on making room for every person, every perspective, and every idea and figuring out what happens when a group has to decide together what comes next.

What becomes possible when everyone gets a seat at the table?

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to Art + Chess + Nature Club today!

It was so lovely seeing new faces alongside familiar ones and watching the kids settle in and follow whatever called to them. Some dove into art, others got lost in chess games, while others were zip lining, whittling, or playing with the leaves scattered across the land.

That’s one of our favorite things about these afternoons. There’s no set agenda, no expectation to do it all, and no one telling the kids what they should be doing. Just space, materials, nature, and the freedom to explore their own interests and connect with each other along the way.

Thank you for being part of this growing community and helping us create a place where kids can simply show up, be themselves, and see where the afternoon takes them. ❤️

A leaf is easy to overlook. Until you’re asked to draw one. 😉

Then suddenly you’re noticing the tiny shifts along the edge, the way the veins branch, the variations in color, the places where the leaf has been nibbled or weathered.

That’s what made this project so interesting. The kids weren’t just drawing a leaf, they were studying one closely enough to understand it.

The microscopes took that even further, turning a familiar object into something worth investigating.

Then came the colored pencils: layering, blending, changing pressure, building saturation, and figuring out how to make a flat drawing feel dimensional.

A simple leaf became a lesson in observation, patience, and seeing what’s actually there. And to us, that’s one of the best things art can do: make us look twice.

There’s a reason we don’t start with the art. We start outside.

We walk the land, notice what’s changing, collect things that catch our attention, ask questions, and give kids time to simply explore. Then we bring what we’ve discovered back to the outdoor studio and use it as inspiration for making.

At Spark, nature is the classroom and art is another way of investigating it. And just as important, this class gives parents and caregivers the chance to slow down and experience it alongside their kids. There’s no expectation that everyone makes the same thing or follows the same path. We offer an invitation, and then let the kids take it where they want to go.

Our first few weeks have been full of leaves, paint, muddy hands, whittling, compasses, little discoveries, and plenty of free play.

Parent + Child Art & Nature is a 90-minute weekly class for ages 3+, with babies, toddlers, and siblings welcome. Come for the art, stay for the exploring, and let your child experience Spark PA at their own pace.

One of our favorite things about this time of year is that the forest basically hands us our color palette.

For this mixed-media project, we wanted to bring some of that autumn beauty into the outdoor studio and it turned out to be such a simple, fun activity.

We started with two sheets of paper. On the first, the kids used acrylic paint to cover the entire page with fall colors, a mix of yellows, oranges, reds, greens, and browns, layering and mixing the colors to create their own autumn inspired abstract.

While that dried, we painted a second sheet using blues and whites to create the sky.

Then came the fun part: we took the colorful painted paper and cut out leaves in all different shapes and sizes. The kids arranged them across their blue backgrounds and glued them down to create their own fall scenes.

The result was a whole autumn landscape made from painted paper. This is such a fun one to recreate at home. Put out some paint, turn on some music, and let the kids make their own version of the season. A perfect way to appreciate the beauty happening right outside your window. 🍁

When we started talking about creating a Leadership Program at Spark, we kept asking ourselves: Why isn’t something like this already being offered anywhere???

There are so many incredible opportunities for kids in our area, but we couldn’t find anything quite like this, a space specifically designed for kids to practice leadership, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and social skills through hands-on experiences and real interactions with other kids.

So we decided to create it with the help of leadership expert and fellow parent .err 🙏🏼

And after watching our first group jump into Week 1, we are even more convinced that kids NEED this.

Not another class where adults tell them what leadership means. A place where they can practice it. Where they can question, experiment, get things wrong, listen to each other, try again, and figure out how they want to show up in a group.

Last week was Curiosity: The Power of Noticing.

This week we move into Communication: The Power of Being Heard where we will focus on how to express ourselves, really listen, navigate differences, and make sure other people feel heard.

Is a four-week program going to change the world? Of course not. But we believe these skills have to start somewhere. The seeds MUST be planted in childhood. We can complain about our current culture OR we can raise our kids with the awareness, tools, confidence and skills to navigate the world. We’re choosing the latter 😉

At Spark Nature, the seasons help us write the curriculum.

Instead of teaching about autumn from a worksheet, we step outside and see it happening in real time. Nature becomes the textbook. The changing leaves become our science lesson, our art study, our vocabulary, and a reason to slow down and pay attention.

The forest gives us the subject. We follow the questions that come from being there and let the learning unfold from what’s right in front of us.

This is the power of nature education. It turns curiosity into connection and connection into understanding.

Today we welcomed Devin Devine to Spark PA for our very first Intro to Masonry Workshop and it was such an incredible beginning.

We started with the fundamentals: What is masonry? What is stone? What types of stone are used for building? We explored balance, bonding, and how individual stones come together to create something strong.

Devin also shared some of his incredible artistic stonework and opened up a bigger conversation: masonry is a real career. You can work with your hands, build beautiful things, create art, and make a living doing it. We love planting those seeds and helping kids see possibilities for what they might become.

And then we built!

After learning the one-over-two building principle, we started with a group build before breaking into smaller teams. Three types of stone, lots of possibilities, and plenty of freedom to experiment.

Some kids worked together, others worked solo. Some built, scrapped their ideas, and started again. And what they came up with was incredible: castles, towers, houses, waterslides, working drawbridges, sandboxes with sandcastles and names and details that could only have come from their imaginations. Total flow state.

We took a tour of each structure, with kids sharing their designs while the others listened, asked questions, and offered compliments. No two were alike and despite how amazing they were, we destroyed them all. 😂

For our final build, everyone worked together on a circular structure. The kids decided it needed a roof, so naturally they went foraging for sticks to complete the project.

But we learned today is this: Masonry is science AND art. It’s problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, experimentation, patience, and learning to see what’s possible with a pile of stone.

This was just the beginning of what we hope will become an incredible new offering at Spark. So grateful to Devin for sharing his craft with us and to these kids for jumping in with such curiosity, creativity and confidence. 🪨
