This week our team visited Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University to discuss the current state of respiratory protection innovation for wildland and WUI firefighters.

As one of the leading PPE research laboratories in the country, NC State has been a key partner in advancing research on garments, respiratory devices, laundering studies, and other work that directly informs our firefighter health and safety outreach and education efforts. We are so grateful for partnerships like this to help move practical, science-based solutions from the lab to the fireline.

Meet the newest member of our team, Oliver Pilan!

Oliver joins us as a biomedical research engineer with a background in advancing respiratory protection for wildland firefighters. His expertise will support our ongoing work to improve firefighter health, safety, and long-term wellness in the wildland and WUI environment.

Welcome to the team, Oliver!

Fire as a tool for resilience. This burn supports fuels reduction and invasive species removal, while our team collects samples for the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study to help advance firefighter health research. We appreciate all of the participants in this important study that are improving the understanding of occupational exposure in fire fighting.

Our team is at the State Capitol today with firefighters and public safety partners for the AB 1383 rally. This bill would allow local agencies to negotiate improved public safety retirement benefits, including a possible 3% at 55 formula, to better reflect the physical demands and health risks of firefighting and public safety work.

We are proud to stand with those advancing firefighter health, safety, and well-being across California.

Today our team is in San Luis Obispo County collecting biomarker samples from wildland firefighters as part of the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study.

This burn is focused on fuels reduction and habitat restoration, including the removal of invasive yellow star-thistle.

We’re grateful to CAL FIRE and the wildland firefighters supporting this important fieldwork, helping advance research on firefighter exposures during real-world wildland fire operations.

Today, our team is out at CA-219: Wildland Firefighting – Firing Operations, collecting biomarker samples for the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study.

By gathering data during real-world training environments, we’re helping researchers better understand firefighter exposures and their potential long-term health impacts.

Thank you to the firefighters participating in this important work, and to CAL FIRE for helping support opportunities that advance science, training, and firefighter health and safety.

One month later, we’re still grateful for everyone who helped make The Wildfire Conservancy’s 2026 Annual Symposium a successful gathering for firefighter health and safety.

The event brought together researchers, fire service leaders, health and safety experts, and partners to discuss critical issues facing the fire service, from occupational exposure and lung health to respiratory protection, decontamination practices, and early detection.

Thank you to all who attended, presented, supported, and helped advance the important work of connecting research with practical solutions for the field.

Yesterday, we were collecting blood samples from participants enrolled in the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study in partnership with the University of Arizona. We continue to enroll new participants while also conducting follow-up collections with current study participants. Thank you CAL FIRE for working with us to make collection days like this possible.

This work helps strengthen the research behind firefighter occupational exposure, health, and long-term cancer risk — and we are very grateful to the firefighters who continue to make this research possible.
