Greetings, everyone!

Friday will be my last day serving as the PK–12 Principal for the Kotzebue schools. Beginning next week, Mr. Jeremy Millard will step into the role as your new principal. Mr. Millard is very excited about joining the Kotzebue community, and I am confident that he will do a great job.

I want to sincerely thank everyone for making me feel so welcome during my time in Kotzebue. I hope you will extend the same support and encouragement to Mr. Millard that you so generously gave to me.

When I arrived in Kotzebue, I knew there were many questions and concerns in the community about moving from two principals to one. With the help of an incredibly dedicated group of teachers, staff, and assistant principals, we made it work. These past two months have absolutely flown by, and I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish together in such a short amount of time.

With so many changes taking place, the beginning of this school year certainly presented its challenges. But everyone stepped up, worked together, and supported one another, and it ultimately became one of the best starts to a school year I have ever been fortunate enough to be part of. That is a testament to the people who make Kotzebue schools such a special place.

A great deal of that credit also belongs to the students. They have been an absolute joy to work with, and I am truly going to miss them. The students, families, teachers, and staff of Kotzebue have given me a great deal to be grateful for, and you are incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful school community.

Finally, I want to thank everyone in the district office for their support and for giving me the opportunity to serve the Kotzebue schools. It is an experience I will always appreciate and never forget.

Thank you all for your kindness, support, and hard work. I wish Mr. Millard and the entire Kotzebue school community nothing but the very best moving forward.

Dear KMHS/JNES Parents/Guardians,

This letter is to inform you that all Northwest Arctic Borough School District schools will
have an early student release at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026.

Teachers will use the afternoon to participate in professional learning focused on
strengthening instruction and better meeting the needs of our students. This dedicated
time for collaboration and learning helps us continue providing the highest quality
educational experience for every child.

KMHS Parents, I have two items to share with you, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

1. ATV Parking - To improve safety and to lessen traffic congestion in the main parking lot, we will be asking our students who ride ATVs to park in the parking lot behind the school. It has recently been graded with new gravel and it is in great condition. We will also have someone monitoring this back parking lot to ensure student safety.

2. Returning to Class After Lunch - We are having a problem with some of our high school students returning late to class after lunch. Beginning on Monday the following policy will be in effect:

If a student is late to class after leaving campus for lunch, their teacher will mark them tardy. If a student receives three tardies immediately following lunch in one semester, their off campus privilege will be denied for five school days. Each additional tardy after the initial three during that semester will result in an additional two days without off-campus lunch privileges.

The NWABSD announces that the following seats on the Kotzebue Advisory School Council are up for election at the October 6, 2026 elections:

Seat: Term
C Three-year term
F Three-year term
G Three-year term

To be eligible, a candidate must be:
1. A citizen of the United States;
2. At least 18 years of age;
3. A resident of Kotzebue for at least thirty (30) days immediately
preceding the election;
4. Qualified to vote in State and Municipal Elections;
5. Not disqualified to vote under *Article V, Section 2, of the State of
Alaska Constitution; and
6. Not a felon or been convicted of any sex-related crime or crime
involving children.

CANDIDATES MUST FILE A DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY FORM with the Superintendent’s Office BETWEEN AUGUST 30, 2026 AND
SEPTEMBER 14, 2026 to have your name listed on the official ballot.

Parents,

Many students still do not have their laptops for classes due to student/parent laptop contracts not being completed. We would like to ensure all students have their laptops in a timely manner and understand it is not always possible to be at the school during specific hours. Below are screenshots of the process needed to get to and complete the contract from home.

1. Head over to https://www.nwarctic.org
2. Select Kotzebue Middle/High school from the selection
3. Select “Student iPad/Laptop Contracts” found under “Parents & Students"
4. Open the contract “5-12 Student Laptop Contract & Forms"
5. Ensure the contacts under “Resource Technology Leader,” “Principal,” and “Secretary” match the image, then begin signing.
