Get ready! The 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award opens September 25! ✨

Early childhood educators do so much for Alaska’s children and families. They nurture, teach, comfort, encourage, and help young children build the foundation they need to learn and thrive. Their work matters. 💚

That’s why thread is excited to offer the 2026 Alaska SEED Mini ROOTS Award, providing a one-time financial award of $500.00 to eligible early childhood and school-age professionals. 🌱

The 2026 Mini ROOTS Award is made possible through one-time federal Preschool Development Grant B-5 funding together with resources from the Alaska SEED Child Care Resource and Referral grant. While this is not the long-term investment we believe Alaska’s early childhood workforce needs, it is an opportunity to provide meaningful support to educators right now. Every bit helps, and we want to get these dollars into the hands of educators as quickly as possible.

thread recognizes that early childhood educators deserve more than a one-time award. We will continue to advocate for sustainable, annual investment in the early childhood workforce because strong compensation and support are essential to recruiting and retaining educators who keep child care programs open and operating. 🫶

Today on Labor Day, I want to give a big shout out for the people whose labor makes it possible for other people to go to work and contribute to their communities and economies and that is childcare providers. These are people who are taking an active role in raising other people’s children, helping them meet developmental milestones and learn the crucial early skills that children need to succeed. They are all too often underpaid and undervalued, but they are truly amazing people who give of themselves for long days. I’m especially partial to all the Nunakins Aunties, you are all rockstars in my book!

It is traditional practice in our Iñupiaq culture to introduce ourselves. I'm thinking of all my colleagues back in the classroom. A common back to school activity is an All About Me sharing sheet.

There are a million ways to spin the activity and tie it into curriculum. For example if you are studying berries: My favorite berry is....

A positive affirmation at the bottom is always good. Thanks to Chelsea Zibell, I added an affirmation she had shared.

thread's 2026-27 CDA Training Series is accepting applications through August 21. Approved applicants will receive:

⭐ Free, 1-year membership to ProSolutions Training, including a package of CDA courses, to complete your CDA training requirements through ProSolutions.
⭐ Financial support to cover the CDA application fee ($525).
⭐ A minimum of $2,000 for completing all sessions and achieving a CDA certification. No partial credit or partial compensation will be given.

Enrollment is open now through August 31 for this initiative that supports Alaskans interested in starting a licensed child care program or expanding their existing program. 🙌 Participants receive technical assistance, practical resources, startup materials, and stipends to help offset eligible startup costs.

By reducing barriers to opening licensed child care businesses, Business of Caring helps expand access to quality child care for families across Alaska. 🫶
