Ivy Tech Kokomoβs third annual Automation & Robotics Mini-camp is officially over but the 20 area high schoolers who participated will long remember the hands-on experience of troubleshooting, programming, and operating industrial automation technology.
The four-day mini-camp introduces high schoolers and homeschooled teens to in-demand STEM careers. It provides a practical glimpse into how technology is transforming modern manufacturing before the students enter college or the workforce. The camp covered areas of basic electricity, robotics, CNC machining, battery technology, pneumatics, and programmable logic controllers.
To round out the experience, the students got to interact with representatives from local manufacturing leaders Haynes, Stellantis, and AndyMark, thanks to the Ivy+ Career Link team who coordinated this session. With the opportunity to ask employers about their companiesβ expectations and to practice interviewing with potential future employers, students got a new perspective on how engineering and automation will reshape the regional labor market.
We are incredibly grateful to the Ivy Tech Foundation, the Gene Haas Foundation and the Battery Innovation Center for their funding and donation of time and talent. Thanks to their contributions, participants had the chance to develop new friendships, dip their toes in industrial technology, and experience a bit or real-life automation and robotics in the workplace.
Be on the lookout next spring for information on the 2027 mini-camp. It promises to be even bigger and better.

A βJust wow!β from our recent Automation & Robotics Mini-camp for local high school students.
Rich Ravas, a lead instructor for the program, said there were some βover-achievers " in a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) class taught by fellow Ivy Tech industrial technology instructor Bill Robertson that concluded the four-day camp.
What to do when a few students over-achieved and got ahead? How about a βgo-fastβ project, giving them 30 minutes, as Rich described, βto decide what and how to coordinate amongst themselves, divide up the work, create a simple wiring schematic, commission and program a PLC, and tome sequence all four pistons across two trainers using limit switches as the triggers for next steps in action.β
Get all that? Rich says the students came close to achieving the time goal, had some slight errors to diagnose and correct, and, with guidance by Bill at the end, were able to get all up and running in about 35 minutes.
βYou could see the excitement in their faces when all was up and running in such a short amount of time,β Rich concluded. βA nice application of numerous skills they learned throughout the week. Likely, this sparked a few careers in the trades or in engineering!β Thatβs the goal!

Community is stronger when we show up for each other. π
Yesterday, Ivy Tech proudly participated in United Way's Day of Caring by rolling up our sleeves and giving back! Our volunteers spent the day serving organizations throughout the community, while another team helped refresh our campus courtyard to create an even more welcoming space for our students.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated their time, energy, and heart to make a difference. We're grateful to be part of a community that cares so deeply. π
