The clouds hung low and grey as the red Subaru Legacy sped towards the mountains. I had lived in Alaska for a few years but had not done much camping or hiking. My friends Karen and David, and their two kids Audrey and Miles, came to visit. Our goal was to climb Mt. Healy, near Denali National Park. I do not remember the views so much, if it was Mt. Healy that we hiked and I do not have any pictures. I do remember laughing, the great snacks Karen packed, and the false peaks.  So many false peaks.  It seemed like the whole mountain was climbing up, thinking we were so close to the top, only to find there was more to climb. The last few years have reminded me of those false peaks.  My brother David shared with me a book he was reading about climbing your second mountain. It is about finding your next thing. After spending most of their life in one career/vocation to make money, many people later in life are switching jobs and finding jobs that are more satisfying and fulfilling. 
I have worked with kids in one way or another for the last 30 years. The last ten years was in classrooms with tiny humans all day.  When I stopped being in the classroom, I offered classes and wilderness camps through my own business license, the Kodiak Compass Classroom. More recently I wrote a Kodiak alphabet book and started substitute teaching in the school district. It has been a passion of mine to build a community of lifelong learners.  Instead of a second mountain, mine has seemed a bit more like a series of false peaks on the same mountain. I am not sure if this is another peak on the same mountain or starting a new mountain but I am very excited about this next climb as the education coordinator as our local bookstore, The Islander Bookshop!!  It is part-time and I will start off by just learning to be a bookseller. I am very excited about the possibilities of this position and being a part of this amazing community of book lovers and learners.  So excited to see where this new climb takes me!

Gg is for goats!! Come see me at the Farmers’ market next Saturday and check out the rest of the alphabet in my Kodiak alphabet book! I will also be offering some play-based, open ended activities for kids based around my book. 😁 Hope to see you there! Saturday May 31 from 10-2:00 at the Kodiak Baptist Mission on Mission Road.

The bones I carry.
I can’t believe she’s gone. It still hits me hard sometimes. Last year around this time, I was able to call my mom. We did not talk much and sometimes there were long awkward pauses but we were able to talk. life without is still life and a constant adjustment.
Ash Wednesday marks the 40 days before Easter. It can be a time of reflection and going without, much like the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness.
Prone to Wander by Joanna Harader is the Lenten devotion I am reading this year. Yesterday’s reading for Ash Wednesday comes from Exodus when the children of Israel are freed from slavery and leave Egypt. She talks about how they brought the bones of Joseph with them, that the past can bring hope to the future. She asks us to consider…what bones do we want to carry forth? What stories, what memories will guide us through this Lenten season? The stories of my grandmothers for sure. Strong, courageous, self-made women-everything I strive to be. Memories of my mom…..our Easter dresses, dinner at 4:30, her eating tomato sandwiches at our kitchen table, our time together last fall, the stories from her friends… parts of her life I didn’t know very well. Those are the bones I want to carry. Many people give up things for Lent with the goal of becoming more focused on Christ on a daily basis. While I have deleted the two games on my phone that do cause a fair amount of mindless distraction, I am also adding writing. Each day I am going to strive to write a story or memory about my grandmothers or my mom. May they bring me hope and inspiration. Joanna Harder offers these words to everyone…..From dust we have come, to dust we shall return, and God indeed is with us on this journey.

Animals in the Round: Chickadee. Storytelling, map making, story painting, play and discovery guided our time together last week during our morning class. We have two Animals in the Round this week on Thursday, 9:30 to 12:00 and one at 3:30 to 5:30. The morning class will explore with Red Fox and the afternoon class will learn from Rainbow Trout. 😄. F is for fox! Exploring and discovering through play is a great motivator for learning! Our alphabet nature class formed family groups to build dens, foraged for food, and fought off predators. When the colder temps and wind got a bit too much, we enjoyed telling stories during snack inside.
