Stay close. Go far. 🌊

Tessa Davis is a great example of what’s possible when you build your education close to home. After earning her associate degree from Kodiak College, she spent the summer gaining hands-on experience in harmful algal bloom research through an Alaska Sea Grant fellowship.

What happens when people can train for a career without leaving home?

They can build skills, earn credentials and start putting those skills to work right here in Kodiak.

That’s one of the reasons community campuses matter.

A recent University of Alaska economic impact report found that 76% of UA bachelor’s graduates and 82% of certificate and associate graduates in high-demand programs were working in Alaska within a year of completing their programs.

At Kodiak College, we see the local side of that equation every day.

People taking nursing prerequisites while raising a family.
People learning marine trades while working in the industry.
People earning certificates and degrees without having to leave the island to get started.

When education is accessible close to home, communities have another way to grow their own workforce.

And when people can build a career here, that creates a stronger chance that they’ll stay here, too.

That’s what a community campus can do.

🧄 Garlic Harvest with Camai Club! 🌱

The Camai Club invites you to join us tomorrow, Monday 9/21 at noon in the Campus Center Lobby for a garlic harvest from the Kodiak College community garden.

This hands-on event is part of the Camai Club’s Fall Calendar of Events - a season full of opportunities to connect, share culture, and build community.

Come for the garlic, stay for the company. Everyone is welcome - students, staff, and community members alike!

A college course you can complete in two days - STARTING THIS FRIDAY!

Interested in Alutiiq art, history, culture or hands-on learning? There’s still room in AKNS A190 D31: Ancestral Alutiiq Arts at Kodiak College.

This 1-credit course ($250) is an immersive, two-day experience:

Friday, Sept. 18
9 a.m.–12:15 p.m. | Kodiak College
Explore Alutiiq artistic imagery, cultural history, cultural suppression and the reawakening of traditional knowledge.

1–5:30 p.m. | Alutiiq Museum
Explore the Museum’s collections, gallery, store and Marketplace Store, with a firsthand look at Alutiiq art and cultural materials.

Saturday, Sept. 19
9 a.m.–12:15 p.m. | Kodiak College
Continue exploring ancestral Alutiiq arts and cultural knowledge.

1–5:30 p.m. | Alutiiq Museum
Presentation and hands-on workshop with Jessica Towns-Camara, including making a two-strand Sugpiaq beaded necklace.

Jessica researched an ancestral two-strand necklace at the Phoebe Hearst Museum, including its artist and traditional design, before working to reintroduce the form. Students will learn about that story and make their own.

1 credit • $250 • Two full days
Mornings at Kodiak College. Afternoons at the Alutiiq Museum.

65+? Eligible Alaska residents can waive tuition.
KITA Grant for Alutiiq Artists? Eligible students may have the course cost reimbursed.

Meet Bradly Cobban! 👋

Born and raised in Kodiak, Bradly graduated from UAA in 2024 with a BA in History and a minor in Creative Writing. Since then, he’s spent the last three years working as a copywriter/editor and local radio DJ, while also starting more crochet projects than he probably needs.

Bradly has been part of the Kodiak College community since May 2025, working part-time with CAMP. Now, we’re excited to officially welcome him to the team in his new full-time role as CAMP Coordinator!

You can find Bradly in the Study Lab Monday–Friday from 1–8 p.m. and Sundays from 2–5 p.m. Stop by, say hi, and maybe ask him about his latest crochet project. 🧶
