This week’s “Minecraft Survival: The Building Blocks of Coding” camp has been thrilling for this set up techies! Thanks to iCode Knoxville for their partnership in this pilot project to translate their skills in game design into viable career pathways. Students practiced sequencing, loops, conditionals, and problem-solving through fun, in-game challenges. Here’s some shots of the group in action!

Our Maker Challenge Summer Camp at our Magnolia Campus was the best time! In partnership with MakerUSA and funded through a grant from The Arconic Foundation, this camp challenged students to design a prototype that helps solve a real-world problem. The groups create prototypes that help people stay organized, manage their gaming systems, and excel in sports.

A huge thanks to instructor Melissa Carey, the team at MakerUSA, Arconic, and our awesome colleagues at the Magnolia Campus for making this possible. We hope to see these students at Pellissippi one day, where they can put their dreams into action!

What a weekend! WCD hosted an ACE Metrology class and a Lifelong Learnining Craft Welding class at our Strawberry Plains campus on Saturday. They were outstanding! Kudos to instructors Paul Barrow (Metrology) and Aaron Bullard (Welding), as well as our own resident expert, Andy Polnicki (Megalab director).

The ACE classes (CNC Machining and Metrology) are grant funded by ACE and available for anyone in the community to come and reskill or upskill at no cost!

Our Craft Welding class was incredible! This class is for those who want to get a taste of welding, either just for fun or as a potential skilled trade pathway. The students make a project (sprocket flower and metal sheet roses for Mother’s Day) and learn the safety and fundamentals of welding. One of the students from the class is planning to enroll in PSCC’s academic Welding program!

Super proud and grateful to get to be a part of this excellent work.

Blacksmithing Basics: Forge Your Skills
Discover the timeless Appalachian art of blacksmithing in this hands-on, 6-week course for beginners. You'll learn forge safety, proper tool technique, and fundamental terms while mastering essential skills including tapering, bending, drawing out, twisting, and rivet setting. Each week builds on the last as you create functional projects: an S Hook, a twisted bottle opener, a Russian Rose, three J Hooks for a coat rack, and your own set of tongs through rivet setting. The course culminates in a final project of your choice, allowing you to apply all the skills you've learned. No prior experience necessary—leave with confidence at the forge and a collection of handcrafted pieces that honor this traditional mountain craft.
Price: $450 / Instructor: Bryan Baker
