Join us for the University of Tennessee SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) chapter's first event of the year! On Thursday, Sept. 2nd from 11:15AM-12:00PM, SIAM will host a virtual Graduate Internship Panel. Three graduate student speakers will share information about their graduate internship experiences and how they obtained their positions. After each speaker has talked, we will open the floor for a Q&A so bring questions! To conclude the academic year, our SIAM chapter will be holding one more event: a faculty lecture with Dr. Juan Restrepo.

The event will take place over Zoom on Monday, April 12, at 2:15 PM EST. Description below:

Join us to hear from Dr. Juan Restrepo about mathematics at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Dr. Restrepo is the Section Head of the Mathematics In Computation group at ORNL and holds a Joint Faculty appointment in the Mathematics Department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and an adjunct faculty position in the Mathematics Department at Oregon State University. Prior to ORNL, he was a faculty member at Oregon State University and at the University of Arizona. Dr. Restrepo is a Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. In addition to his work, we look forward to hearing from Dr. Restrepo about student opportunities at ORNL.

A reminder for an upcoming SIAM-UTK event...

The UTK SIAM Chapter is honored to have Dr. Betsy Heines, Mathematical Statistician at the U.S. Department of Justice, join us for a talk about her research, career trajectory and current job role. Dr. Heines received her Ph.D. in Mathematical Ecology from UTK in 2017 under the advisement of Dr. Suzanne Lenhart. Her dissertation was titled "Assessing the Economic Trade-Offs Between Prevention and Suppression of Forest Fires". She has also completed internships at the FDA and the Max Planck Institute.

The November issue of SIAM News is headlined by one of our faculty members, Dr. Suzanne Lenhart. Her article, Controlling Invasive Populations in Rivers, co-authored with Yu Jin, Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is the front page feature of the special issue on the Mathematics of Planet Earth. The article studies the control of upstream invasive species populations with respect to water flow rates.

Our first event of the semester is now officially planned.

Friday, September 18th at 12:35 pm, SIAM UTK will be hosting our first event of the year. This will be a presentation and discussion with Dr. James Sunkes, a 2016 UTK math graduate and current staff scientist at Dynetics Inc., a space and defense company in Huntsville, Alabama.

For information about the event, please check out the events tab located on our new SIAM UTK website (https://www.math.utk.edu/info/siam/). In addition to event information, feel free to look around the site for more information about SIAM, SIAM UTK, student resources, and more. It is our goal to make the website the primary interface for all things SIAM!
