Assistant Professor Haochen Li was a recipient of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture’s 2026 William T. Miles MD Memorial Award for Community Service for his work on the Hurricane Helene Recovery Team.

Li was honored for his work developing a high-resolution hydrodynamic flood engine that can map Tennessee’s flood risk at a meter-scale level. The system allowed Li to provide robust and actionable data to support the recovery and rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Professor and Goodrich Chair of Excellence in Civil Engineering Frank Loeffler and his coauthors published new research on the environmental impacts of “forever chemicals” in Nature Microbiology last week. Professor Jon Hathaway of Civil and Environmental Engineering - UT Knoxville, and his team are midway through a $2.6M grant to bring a novel, low-cost living stormwater management system to underserved communities in the Knoxville area.

To maximize community impact, Hathaway’s project also includes child and adult education in partnership with many local organizations, including Socially Equal Energy Efficient Development (SEEED Knox). Learn more about the project at the link below!
