Steinway & Sons mourns the loss of pianist André Watts. At the age of sixteen, Watts made his debut under Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic in a Young People’s Concert and then substituted for an ailing Glenn Gould two weeks later in performances of Liszt’s E-flat Concerto with the orchestra, launching his career. He would go on to become the first internationally famous Black concert pianist. Watts had a warm, emotionally rich touch at the keyboard, notably immortalized on record in his many interpretations of works by Franz Liszt, a composer in whom Watts took inspiration and perhaps found a Romantic kindred spirit.
