When I was a kid I used to think that music was what kept me alive, kind of like oxygen. I couldn’t think straight without it.
What I now know I meant is that I was constantly, every waking moment, stimming rhythmically so that I could focus. And without the rhythms, I could do NUTHING!
I still do it.
I am constantly, every single moment of my entire waking life making rhythms. Whether it be following shapes with my eyes and counting them in groups of 3’s or 4’s, pressing my toes in time to an imaginary waltz, pushing air back and forth between my teeth in complex rhythmic loops, clenching muscles on alternating legs on repeat, humming Melody’s, twitching muscles/tapping fingers/rocking/moving eye balls to a repetitious beat.
It’s a constant.
The reason music gives me life is because when I experience music? All of this stops. The music IS the sensory input my brain seeks.
When I listen to hip hop I don’t need to count.
When I move to music I don’t need to clench my muscles.
When I sing I don’t need to do the air-pushing-teeth thing.
When I play guitar I don’t need to tap my fingers.
Music doesn’t just give context to my stims, it replaces them.
And as much as I love and embrace a good stim, outsourcing that regulatory need (to Spotify or my guitar) is so deeply refreshing.
As an adult, I can look back on my child self and see *exactly* why I thought music was like oxygen.
Because, it literally is!
