Mrs.Adkins third grade class conducted a study on negative and positive particles. Students took their learning and turned it into a static electricity mini experiment. By using the positive and negative particles students made their hair stick up and a balloon stuck to a wall with no tape!

We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Texana Bank Mortgage for selecting Claxton as one of the schools to receive a Teacher Survival Kit! We are so grateful for your thoughtfulness and for supporting our teachers. What a fun surprise and a wonderful way to show appreciation for the people who pour so much into our students every day!

We also want to give a special shoutout to our very own Mrs. Bombardier, who was nominated for Texana Bank’s Teacher Who Deserves Recognition award. She is someone who makes every child feel seen, loved, and safe. She gives her whole heart to her students, and we are so lucky to have her at Claxton. Congratulations, Mrs. Bombardier! This recognition is well deserved ❤️

Thank you to Southern Sips food truck for welcoming Mrs. Alpers' class for an incredible work-based learning experience! Since her students recently launched their own drink cart for teachers, this was the perfect opportunity to see a real business in action. Yesterday, students toured the truck, asked insightful questions, and even learned how to craft a dirty soda like a professional.

CALLING ALL TIME TRAVELERS!

The time machine is ready, and Claxton Elementary is taking a trip through time! Join us for our annual Family STEAM Night on Thursday, October 1st, from 5:00–7:00 PM as
we travel through the past, present, and future with hands-on challenges, technology, creativity, and a little nostalgia along the way. Come explore the legacy we’ve created here at Claxton and discover where imagination, innovation, and STEAM can take us next! And since this is our LAST STEAM Night in this school building… you know what that means: we’re going BIG before we go to our NEW home!

Families will have the opportunity to explore a variety of interactive, family-friendly stations, including adding to the Claxton Time Capsule, traveling through time with our virtual reality headsets, racing a friend to the Moon, and learning from some incredible special guests, including ORAU, ORNL, AMSE, and MORE!

And that’s not all! We’ll also be celebrating the AMAZING work our students have created for this year’s annual Science Fair with special awards at the end of the evening. Come see what our students have been working so hard on and help us celebrate their creativity, curiosity, and accomplishments.

Oh, and did we mention there will be a RAFFLE?! Plus FOOD TRUCKS?! There’s no better way to spend an evening traveling through time than with your family, a little STEAM, some great food, and a whole lot of fun!

STEAM lab highlights for the week! 🚀

This week was all about unplugged coding for our upper grades! Students explored binary code the old-school way...pencils, paper, and pure brain power. They learned how computers “think” in 0s and 1s, decoded secret messages using the binary alphabet, and even turned those codes into multiplication practice.
Big shout-out to Mrs. Walker’s third graders who took binary right back into their classroom—decoding words and using the numbers from their codes to practice multiplication. Cross-curricular win!

Why unplugged first? Because next week we’re plugging in! 🤖 These binary skills are the perfect foundation as we move into robotics and plugged-in coding.

Meanwhile, our younger innovators were hard at work in the STEAM lab. They worked through the engineering design process while learning how to use brand-new building tools. First they created a plan on their blueprint paper of an animal they made up on their own, then built a 3D model of their invented creature. So much creativity and problem-solving!

Proud of all the collaboration and imagination happening in the lab this week!

Our 4th grade students put their creativity and knowledge to work with an Unconventional Heart Project!

After reading *The Circulatory Story* and learning about the heart and circulatory system, students were challenged to design and build their own heart models using some very unconventional materials. Rigatoni, gummy bears, Hot Tamales, yarn, straws, aluminum foil, and more became chambers, valves, blood vessels, blood cells, and other important parts of the heart.

Students used the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, create, and improve their models while showing what they learned about how the heart works.

We love seeing science, engineering, literacy, and creativity come together in such a fun, hands-on way! ❤️

Mrs. Adkins’ class has been learning about multiplication and how to represent it through arrays. Today they used their knowledge to create array “windows” for a 9/11 remembrance project. Students were honored to complete this project and show their knowledge.
