“William Blount, East Tennessee, and the Origins of the Anglo-American Special Relationship”

Come join the Blount Mansion at our Visitor’s Center (200 West Hill Avenue, Knoxville TN 37902) this Thursday, September 17 at 6 p.m. for our annual Dr. Paul H. Bergeron Constitution Day lecture. It is our special pleasure to host Dr. Warren Dockter of the East TN Historical Society.

The lecture will look at Blount’s land speculation and subsequent impeachment. It has long been treated as an episode of corruption, if not constitutional crisis, but should instead be understood as a formative moment in the emergence of a pragmatic Anglo-American relationship. Rooted in East Tennessee and the Southwest frontier, Blount’s actions exposed the limits of revolutionary idealism, forced the United States to confront its dependence on British power, and helped normalize informal cooperation between former enemies in the Atlantic world.

There will be a special DAR bellringing for Constitution Day at 5:30 p.m. before the lecture. All are welcome to come and participate. There is limited free parking onsite. $10 donations at the door are appreciated. Cash and card accepted. Don’t miss this enlightening discussion!

As summer officially comes to an end and we settle into the Fall semester, we're reflecting on the awesome work of our faculty and graduate students this summer.

Travel for research and to present our work is essential to what we do as a department. It strengthens our research, enriches our teaching, fosters collaboration, and helps us to build a community committed to meaningful historical scholarship. We are grateful for the opportunities we have to research and present, and can't wait for what's next for the History Department at the University of Tennessee.

Today, we are celebrating the publication of a new book by Dr. Michael Woods, Distinguished Professor in the Humanities and Director of the Andrew Jackson Papers. The book is available today from the University of North Carolina Press.

In The Business of Bigotry, Dr. Woods reveals the stunning resilience of racist ideology before and after the Civil War and demonstrates how the era’s print media, business systems, and political alliances allowed ideas like Van Evrie’s to flourish, even as Reconstruction promised a new birth of freedom for Americans of all races.
