"A first of its kind national survey by The Pew Charitable Trusts finds 36 million Americans — about 20% of all borrowers — have used alternative ways to finance a home at some point, including 7 million currently in such arrangements. The borrowers are largely low-income, more likely to live in rural areas, and disproportionately Hispanic and Black, reflecting the racial gap in homeownership.

Unlike mortgages, alternative financing deals are usually not recorded with any government office. They don't start with a bank or mortgage company, and so are not subject to the same state or federal regulations."

Millions of Americans are resorting to risky ways to buy an affordable home Alternative financing arrangements can be the only option for low-income Americans. But they lack the same protections as a mortgage, and many end up paying for years without ever gaining ownership.

🚨🚨Don't miss this summer study abroad opportunity. Taught by our very own Dean/Professor Katie Jones, the course will explore the unique British common law tradition of laws created or clarified by courts, which directly influenced the American legal system. Students will analyze the evolution of public policy in common law and spend our class time in London on field trips. Students will also visit Runnymeade, where the Magna Carta was signed, and learn about its impact on the rule of law today and much more!
