I remember when I had this friend who loved to make jokes at my expense. A great friend, but every joke was an indirect insult. Every “joke” made me feel small but I kept enduring it. After a while, we lost touch.

When we reconnected a few years down the line, it was the same story all over again. But this time, I was already more secure in my identity so I spoke up. I mentioned how I felt about those “jokes” and this person basically said the “jokes” and the friendship were a package deal: l couldn’t have one without the other.

So guess what I did?
I threw the entire package away! That was the end of that friendship.
