📣 Looking for flexible professional development focused on supporting autistic learners?

The Communication and Autism online course from TRIAD Autism is a self-paced, fully asynchronous learning opportunity designed for educators, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and administrators who support autistic students in Pre-K–12 settings across Tennessee.

In this 2-hour course, participants will:
✅ Explore characteristics of autism and their impact on communication
✅ Learn practical strategies to promote communication in everyday learning environments
✅ Build a foundation for teaching communication using the ABCs of learning
✅ Gain an understanding of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
✅ Reflect on implementation and create plans for use with students

A certificate of completion is available upon successful completion of all coursework and assignments.

Participants will have three months to complete the course after enrollment.

The Tennessee Department of Education has been honored to partner with The Arc Tennessee for Family Engagement in Special Education and Vanderbilt University through Transition Tennessee and Tennessee Tiered Supports Center as part of the Tennessee Technical Assistance Network (TN-TAN). Through these partnerships, The Arc TN and Vanderbilt University have played a vital role in strengthening family–school collaboration, systems of support for school teams, and preparing students with disabilities for meaningful postsecondary engagement. We are grateful for their expertise, dedication, and collaborative efforts to improve outcomes for students across the state.

As part of the department’s commitment to continuous improvement and responsible stewardship of public resources, all TN-TAN supports are awarded through a competitive application process. Following this process, the department has selected new grantees to lead the Family & School Engagement and Tiered Intervention Support priorities moving forward. The work previously supported by Vanderbilt University through Transition TN will continue under an updated scope within the network, expanding to include a broader range of special education programming supports. The vendor for these instructional supports has not yet been awarded; however, the department is actively supporting a thoughtful and well-coordinated transition for both partners to ensure continuity of services and to honor their meaningful contributions.

The department remains deeply committed to ensuring that high-quality TN-TAN supports are available at no cost to Tennessee public schools. We will build upon the strong foundation established by The Arc TN, Transition TN, and TN Tiered Supports Center to ensure continued, effective support for students with disabilities, their families, and the educators who serve them.

Additional information about the new partner and updated resources will be shared in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we extend our sincere appreciation to The Arc TN and Vanderbilt University for their impactful work and look forward to building on this foundation with our new partner.
