A whole child approach to high-quality early education where children grow to love learning.

Stories help children make sense of big ideas.

This week, books and classroom conversations are helping children explore freedom, family, community, joy, fairness, and belonging in ways that are meaningful for young learners.

When children listen to stories by Black authors, see diverse families represented, notice classroom photos, and talk with teachers about what they see, they are practicing more than literacy.

They are building vocabulary.
They are learning to ask thoughtful questions.
They are practicing empathy.
They are noticing that many stories matter.
They are beginning to understand that every person deserves dignity, care, and belonging.

This is one reason representation matters in early childhood. The stories children hear shape the way they imagine themselves and the way they learn to see others.

We’d love to hear what children's books by Black authors or illustrators your family loves!

This week, is all about celebrating Freedom, Family & Joy.

As we prepare to honor Juneteenth, our classrooms are exploring big ideas in age-appropriate ways: belonging, fairness, family, courage, joy, and what it means to help one another feel welcome.

In early childhood, children learn through concrete experiences. A story helps them imagine. A song helps them remember. A mural helps them work together. A sensory table invites them to notice, compare, and talk. A classroom conversation helps them practice empathy.

Throughout the week, children will explore these ideas through art, books, music, outdoor play, water play, family connection, and joyful classroom experiences.

Freedom, joy, and community are not only words for children to hear. They are values children can begin to practice with support, language, and care.

What is one way your family helps your child feel loved, welcomed, and free to be themselves?

As we wrapped up our AAPI Celebration study, we were reminded that cultural learning is not one isolated activity.

It lives in the books children hear, the art they create, the foods they taste, the questions they ask, the music they move to, the classroom displays they notice, and the conversations adults make space for with care.

Over the past few weeks, children explored Asian American and Pacific Islander cultures through real classroom experiences: stories, food, art, movement, conversation, and hands-on learning. They practiced language, observation, empathy, fine motor skills, cooperation, confidence, and respectful curiosity.

Representation matters in early childhood because stories help children understand themselves and the wider world. When children encounter many cultures with joy and respect, they begin building the empathy and imagination that shape how they see other people.

As summer reading begins, we invite families to choose books and stories that help children wonder, ask thoughtful questions, and see the beauty of many different families, places, and traditions.

Looking for a cozy, low-pressure way to keep reading part of your summer rhythm?

's Summer Library Challenge is happening now through August 9. 🦕

Children can participate by reading, listening to stories, or joining library programs. Reading or listening for 20 minutes counts as an activity, and every few activities help children work toward prizes through the library!

This is such a sweet way to make literacy feel playful and connected to real life: choosing books, visiting the library, listening together, and celebrating small reading moments all summer long. 🦖

At home, try keeping books in easy places: beside the bed, in the car, near the couch, by the picnic blanket, or in a basket by the door for library day.

Visit Knox County Public Library for the full Summer Library Challenge details, or stop by a local branch to get started. We can’t wait to see how you are reading this summer!
