This Spring and Summer, the East Tennessee Historical Society will be hosting an in-person "Back to the Basics: Strategies for Using Primary Sources" educator workshop with Teaching with Primary Sources - Middle Tennessee State University in Knoxville, a Virtual Watch Party featuring clips Ken Burns's new documentary Benjamin Franklin in partnership with Teaching with Primary Sources - Middle Tennessee State University and East Tennessee PBS, a multiple day Teach Tennessee History: Trail of Tears Summer Institute sponsored by Humanities Tennessee with Teaching with Primary Sources - Middle Tennessee State University and the MTSU Center for Historic Preservation, and in-person two day workshop, "Perspectives on Tennessee History," in Nashville with multiple statewide partners for Discover Tennessee History.

Have you visited History Headquarters yet? Visit us this weekend for some crafting and fun! We will be making paper chains and snowflakes. We keep catching our Elf, Scout Elf David, hanging out in History Headquarters on the weekends (during the week Scout Elf David does not visit the classroom). Today we honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. A further 1,178 people were injured in the attack, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah). The USS Tennessee lost 5 service members that day. Our next Open House Advising Session is tomorrow! Join THD staff online and you can test out your thesis, ask for advice on formatting pdfs, and clarify deadlines. The Open House sessions are open to educators and students. Your meeting link will be sent after you complete a quick registration. These sessions will not be recorded.

All Advising Open House sessions will begin at 4 pm CST/5 pm EST and last one hour. You do not need to stay for the entire hour. Feel free to come and go as needed!

At 5:00 a.m. in 1943, amid the throes of World War II, the Manhattan Project's "secret" graphite reactor code named "X-10" went critical. It was not only the first reactor built for continuous operation but also the first to produce plutonium.

X-10 is preserved by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and may be toured virtually at https://map.ornl.org/ -IFRAM_2020073199043

Check out this PD opportunity! Featuring resources from the Library of Congress, National History Day (NHD) is offering a course for teachers to focus on the skills of historical argumentation. The course will include four live webinars with an expert historian and an NHD curriculum specialist. Teachers will develop strategies to help their students think like a historian and develop a solid historical argument.

Live programs are tentatively scheduled for 7 pm ET / 4 pm PT on January 5, February 9, March 9, and April 6. These dates will be confirmed with participants when the course launches in December. There are options available if you cannot attend a live program.

The cost is free and the deadline to apply is this Friday, November 5, 2021. Use the link in our bio to apply.

This morning we had a great time learning and creating with a group of homeschool students. One learner created a "Cowboy" doll - How creative is his design?? The legs were modeled out of pipe cleaners to make it easier for the doll to ride horses. 🐴🤠
