Oregon Tech Civil Engineering Seniors have won the 2025 KEEN Bridge Competition and a $500 prize! In its second year, the competition challenges students to create the most structurally efficient solution to span 36 inches with a piece of rigid foam insulation that is ½”x18”x36”. The Oregon Tech bridge supported 47 pounds with a weight of only 0.374 pounds, for a strength-to-weight ratio of 126. Eight other universities participated, including the University of Washington, James Madison University, Ohio Northern University, Virginia Military Institute. In preparing their bridge, the students assessed the material and connection properties of the foam and hot glue, which function much like steel plate and welded connections, and considered best practices in bridge girder design like cover plates and stiffeners.
