An Oregon Tech connection comes full circle in Finland!

While attending the ICT Summer School at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, Oregon Tech students recently had an unexpected opportunity thanks to an Oregon Tech alumnus.

Kari Veikkolainen studied at Metropolia and spent a term as an exchange student at Oregon Tech nearly 20 years ago. After seeing on Oregon Tech's social media that a group of students was visiting Helsinki, he reached out to invite them to tour his workplace, Planmeca, a global Finnish company that develops medical imaging technology, dental equipment, software, and manufacturing systems.

On Wednesday, students Darren Troutman, Kai Teppo, and JD Lienhart joined Oregon Tech's Sonja Bickford for a behind-the-scenes visit to Planmeca's headquarters and showroom, where Kari is an Electronics Engineer and Software Designer. Students also had the opportunity to meet members of Planmeca's educational outreach team and learn about careers in technology, product development, and advanced manufacturing.

Kari shared stories from his time at Oregon Tech, including learning to snowboard with the Outdoor Program - which he still does!

We're grateful to Kari and the Planmeca team for their hospitality and for showing our students how an Oregon Tech education can lead to opportunities around the world. ๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿ’™ Once an Owl, Always an Owl.

The great faculty and alumni of Oregon Tech's online Master of Science in Healthcare Leadership program have a new video explaining more about the program and how it helps professionals thrive in their leadership roles and incoming professionals learn more about how to be successful.

The program is unique in its focus on the big picture of our populationโ€™s health and the technical skills to help you thrive in leadership roles. The entire healthcare system is strained and requires change to serve a vastly diverse population with unique needs. For our future leaders and educators, it is critical to have leadership, research, teaching, and business skills to tackle new challenges.

Eight Oregon Tech students from our Klamath Falls, Portland-Metro, and Online campuses recently arrived in Finland to attend a three-week intensive academic program, ICT Summer School, at Oregon Tech's international partner institution, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki.

After meeting virtually through information sessions this spring, students connected in person for the first time outside Helsinki's central train station. They then joined a walking tour of downtown Helsinki, learning about Finnish culture, business, and daily life while visiting key landmarks. The group also had the opportunity to swim in the Baltic Sea and experience a traditional Finnish sauna before beginning classes.

Midweek, Oregon Tech hosted a student event in downtown Helsinki where students played Mรถlkky, a popular Finnish lawn game, with the Mรถlkky World Championships being held in Helsinki this week. The event concluded with an ice cream social sponsored by the ETM Dean's Office.

On Thursday, students welcomed guest speaker Mervi Kallio, a Finnish journalist and sports reporter for Viaplay's Formula 1 coverage, who spoke about communication, communication strategy, and the path from university studies to a career in media.

Oregon Tech students participating in the program are:

โ€ข Aubree Kennell, Embedded Systems Engineering Technology
โ€ข Icela Sanchez-Rodriguez, Business
โ€ข Kai Teppo, Mechanical Engineering
โ€ข John Lienhart, Civil Engineering
โ€ข Zane Cogliser, Cybersecurity
โ€ข Mario Pizano, Information Technology
โ€ข Darren Troutman, Computer Engineering Technology
โ€ข Austin Baldwin-Driscoll, Construction Management

Oregon Tech faculty teaching in the program are Professors Sonja Bickford and Gary Lomprey.

We wish them a great experience as they begin their summer studies in Finland.

This weekโ€™s Voices of Oregon Tech celebrates three Distinguished Donor families whose generosity is helping shape the future of Oregon Tech and the lives of generations of students.

Hear from John Stilwell, Glen and Sherry Thomet, and Dee and Tom Thompson, community leaders whose philanthropy reflects a shared belief in the power of education to transform lives.

Their extraordinary investments have created lasting opportunities across campus, including the John and Lois Stilwell Softball Stadium, endowed scholarships that expand access to a world-class education, the Kip Thomet Memorial Fieldhouse honoring the Thomets' late son, and a lead gift supporting Oregon Techโ€™s vision to establish a future medical school dedicated to improving healthcare in rural Oregon.

Together, their stories remind us that philanthropy is more than generosity. It is an investment in people, possibility, and purpose. Through their vision, Oregon Tech students are empowered to learn, lead, innovate, and improve the human condition for generations to come.

Oregon Tech Geomatics has received a 2026 National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Surveying Education Award, along with a $10,000 award to support student success.

This national recognition reflects the program's commitment to preparing the next generation of licensed land surveyors and geospatial professionals through a combination of classroom learning, field experience, and industry engagement.

The award funding will expand opportunities for students to connect with licensed surveyors, alumni, and industry leaders through conferences, guest speakers, field demonstrations, workshops, and networking events. It will also strengthen hands-on learning that combines surveying principles with geospatial technology, helping students build the knowledge and experience needed for the profession.

Congratulations to our Geomatics faculty, students, and alumni on this national recognition!

The path to a debt-free degree is built on a few specific habits.

First, shift your mindset to see the work as a high-paying hourly wage; spending a few hours to secure a $1,000 scholarship is essentially earning $200 an hour.

Second, don't go it alone. Be humble enough to ask professors or mentors for help, as they are often excited to be part of your potential success.

Finally, remember the most important rule: apply early, apply often, and don't count yourself out. Your future is waiting on a few paragraphs. Will you write them?

Apply now at www.oit.edu/OTFscholars. Donโ€™t hesitate โ€“ the deadline to apply is July 16th at 5:00 PM!

In June, Oregon Tech welcomed the next generation of cybersecurity professionals to campus with free camps for middle and high school students.

Hosted through Oregon Tech's Educational Partnerships and Outreach (EPO) program, the camps gave 30 students the opportunity to explore online safety, ethical hacking, digital forensics, cryptography, cyber defense, and more through hands-on activities, team challenges, and real-world problem solving.

Students participated in Capture the Flag competitions, phishing investigations, cybersecurity labs, and group projects while building skills that can help them stay safe online and explore future technology careers.

Thank you to Fortinet, the primary sponsor of the camps, and NW Cyber Camp, the lead organizer, for helping make these experiences possible.

Special thanks to Dr. Praveen Guraja and Manish Nalluri for designing and leading both camps and inspiring students to explore the growing field of cybersecurity.
