On a cold, clear moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not what it seems in the remote town of Almost, Maine. As the Northern Lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the town’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised, hearts are broken…but the bruises heal and the hearts mend – almost – in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.
An award-winning production by John Cariani comprising of several short plays that explore love and loss, the production premiered at the Portland Stage Company in Portland, Maine in 2004 where it broke box office records and garnered critical acclaim.
Popular in professional and nonprofessional theater companies worldwide, the material is thought-provoking and very human. The New York Times noted, “This is a beautifully structured play, with nifty surprise endings (most but not all of them happy) and passing references to characters from other vignettes, which slyly tell us more about them.”
