We are extremely excited to share that we participated in Oregon State University’s annual food drive for the very first time this year, and we are honored to have received an amazing award and recognition for our efforts!
Thanks to our team’s hard work and dedication, we donated over 11,000 pounds of potatoes to our local food bank. This is just another example of how our research efforts continue to make a meaningful impact within our local community. We are proud to support initiatives that help feed families and strengthen the communities we serve!

We had the pleasure of welcoming our local 4-H Cloverbuds to our facility for their potato fun event. During their visit, we provided a tour and demonstrated how we process and prepare our potatoes. The group enjoyed a hands-on experience learning how potato seeds are created and even selected their own potatoes to take home and plant.
It was especially rewarding to watch their excitement as they chose their potatoes—some to grow, others to enjoy eating. They also shared their favorite ways to eat potatoes, which made the experience even more engaging.
We are truly honored to help educate younger generations and inspire their curiosity about how the food they eat is grown and produced.

Celebrating Student Success & Global Collaboration
The entire KBREC team is proud to celebrate Alex McBean and Tashine Facey, recent BSc graduates of the College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE), in Jamaica.
It was a pleasure to host Alex and Tashine as interns at KBREC and support them through a hands-on, immersive experience that reflects the power of international collaboration, mentorship, and experiential learning, core to OSU’s Prosperity Widely Shared mission of creating opportunity and strengthening communities across borders.
Also pictured is Nicholas Foster, part of the 2025 CASE–KBREC internship cohort, continuing this growing legacy of excellence.
We look forward to seeing Alex, Tashine, and Nicholas continue to grow, lead, and make meaningful contributions as they advance in their careers.

The Klamath Falls Snowflake Parade was a huge success! We were thrilled to hand out 3,000 pounds of potatoes to parade spectators, doubling what we distributed last year. Each year our impact grows, and 2025 marked our biggest giving yet! We look forward to participating again next year. KBREC would love to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Just wrapped up a great trip to Utah where I shared our floral h**p research at CANVAS 2025!
This project, carried out over the past couple of seasons, looked at how different floral h**p cultivars respond to irrigation in our semi-arid Klamath Basin. One of the most encouraging findings was that yield and quality stayed strong even when water was reduced, irrigation rate had very little influence on performance. Instead, genetics were the real driver, with certain cultivars consistently standing out in both yield and cannabinoid content.
It was inspiring to reconnect with colleagues from across the country, exchange ideas, and highlight the important work happening at KBREC and OSU. Grateful for the opportunity, and excited about where this research continues to lead us!
A full journal article with these results is currently in development, and I look forward to sharing it once it’s published.
If you’d like to see the poster or learn more about the project, feel free to ask!

Check out this great article.
Nearly half of frozen potato production in North America (representing more than $1 billion in gross revenue to farmers) is thanks to Oregon State University’s Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center — the home of seed development and distribution efforts for new potato varieties.
Seeds selected at the Klamath Falls center make possible the Tri-State Potato Research and Breeding Program, which combines efforts of OSU with those of the USDA in Idaho and Washington, the University of Idaho, and Washington State University, as well as potato commissions in all three states. As part of the effort, OSU scientists, including those in Hermiston and Corvallis, have partnered with regional colleagues to develop and release strains representing $800 million in value to Pacific Northwest producers.
Whether in the form of fries, chips, or baked potatoes, products of this effort — seeded by OSU in Klamath Falls — represent an amazing example of modern land-grant universities fostering collaboration and leveraging federal, state and private investments to feed economic development and possibility.
