People who owned a dog with diabetes had a 38% greater likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes than those who owned a dog without diabetes. There was no corresponding link noted with cats and their owners, however.

According to a recent study, which appears in the BMJ Christmas issue, if a dog has diabetes, there is an increased risk that its owner will, too.

Billed as a more eco-friendly protein source, the insect-based food will be available for purchase in Switzerland. A similar formula, as well as other alternative protein diets, are slated for online sale in the US in January.

Nestlé, one of the largest food groups in the world, announced this week plans to introduce insect-based dog and cat food in Switzerland. U.S. options to come next year.

‼️👨‍⚕️Client communication during a Pandemic👨‍⚕️‼️

“Hi, this is Dr. Moore... is this Fluffy’s mom?”

I always imagined walking into the exam room in my white coat and introducing myself with a firm handshake... instead, I’m picking up a phone and introducing myself and quickly getting to the point because the emergency room is overrun and we sadly don’t have time to build rapport.

The client must build trust in me over the phone within the first few minutes and attempt to understand the diagnostic findings that I am explaining.

There are many pros to this new system, but also many cons. This new way of practicing really pushes one’s communication skills. I’ve heard many veterinary students say “I chose veterinary medicine because I don’t like people.” This frustrates me to no end.... now more than ever, is when good communication makes the biggest difference. We spend a large amount of our time now on the phone with clients and gaining their trust... often during really stressful and emotional times.
