For our Under the Sea theme today, we practiced placing Cereal exactly on the starfish dots. Not only is picking up those tiny pieces an incredible fine motor workout for handwriting prep, but Cereals are infinitely safer for this age group than using tiny plastic beans or beads. We love breaking the "rules" to build better, safer brains! ✨

The absolute easiest way to get toddlers to play together peacefully for more than five minutes! 🌊

​Try this simple setup - we rolled out this giant ocean mat, tossed in some animal figures, and completely stepped back to let them explore.

​The result? They naturally shared the space and dove right into their own hilarious, imaginative conversations - a very serious debate about eating a shark 😅.

Simple, open-ended setups like this naturally encourage them to practice their new vocabulary and social skills while giving you a much-needed breather 🙆‍♀️

At our home-based program, we believe the best way to learn academics is when the kids don't even realize they are "working." This magnetic fishing game is the perfect example of intentional, play-based learning!

Not only are they practicing immense physical control to catch the fish, but they are also doing early math and language work. As they reel in their catches, we are identifying the bright colors and naming the numbers printed on each one.

"Wow, you caught the red fish! Look, it has a number five on it!"
By combining physical movement with numbers and colors, the information sticks in their brains so much faster. Plus, it is just so much fun!

We often think of the play yard as a place purely for burning off energy. But for a toddler, the sights, sounds, and constant movement of outdoor play can sometimes become a little overstimulating.

That is why we set up this real camping tent in our yard today! If you watch closely, you will see exactly why this is so valuable. While one friend joyfully explored the new environment, another immediately laid down on the sleeping bags just to relax and take it all in.

Enclosed spaces like tents or forts reduce visual clutter and provide a deep sense of security. It gives them a quiet, safe boundary to naturally regulate their nervous systems while still enjoying the fresh air!

There is so much pressure to have toddlers tracing perfect letters and drawing straight lines, but early handwriting doesn't work like that. Watch this Little Galaxy star hard at work!

Drawing a line from the top of the page all the way to the bottom is incredibly difficult. The brain has to tell the eyes to track the path, while simultaneously telling the hand to pull the marker downward. It is totally normal (and expected!) for those early lines to be wavy, bumpy, and squiggly.

Every single one of those wobbly lines is building the vital brain-to-hand connection needed for kindergarten.

Often, we focus so much on the academic side of early childhood like letters, numbers, and physical development (which this pegboard is great for!), but the real magic happens in the social interactions.
These two friends sat together, helped each other find the right holes on the board, and even quizzed each other on the peg colors! Seeing them organically practice helping each other without an adult intervening is the ultimate goal of our play-based environment. They are building a real community right here on our space rug. 🚀
