The jumbotron on the football field, the color of your school’s uniforms, the textbook adoption, the paint job on the school remodel…None of these will drive student outcomes, yet it’s where so many school boards spend too much of their time.

Can you relate? What do you think the solution is for your school?

Listen in to this week’s podcast episode for a possible solution.

Have you ever thought that your school board might not be working directly for the benefit of student outcomes? You’re probably right. Many focus instead on things like cracks in building walls, the color of the school’s uniforms, budgets, library books, and more. While these are important, none of these will drive student outcomes.

This week on the podcast, I’m talking with AJ Crabill, author and conservator at DeSoto, Texas ISD. AJ shares valuable insights on how successful boards can spend their time, prioritize growth, and create a continuous improvement cycle within their districts.

We'll also explore the vital role of parent involvement in school boards, representing the vision and values of the community. Learn how you can make a meaningful impact, regardless of your educational background.

Don't miss this enlightening conversation that empowers education leaders, teachers, and decision-makers to prioritize student success and foster effective governance. Tune in now for valuable insights and actionable strategies.

When was the last time you needed an accommodation? When a second cup of coffee felt like a necessity, even if that’s not something you typically have? Or when you needed to take a moment in your quiet car before you walked into your house? Or when you took a walk to get your thoughts together before a big meeting?

We take accommodations all the time as adults, yet our education system doesn’t allow our kids to do the same…unless they’re legally obligated to do so.

We need to offer all our kids options for learning and getting the jiggles out, not just those with IEPs and 504 plans.

Action-oriented parents can make the biggest difference in the education of their children and their communities. When Tanya Scheckley was told her daughter, Eliza, couldn’t get the first grade education she knew she deserved, Tanya took matters into her own hands and created UP Academy.

On this week’s episode, Tanya and I talk about how to create more inclusion in schools, why modifications should be available for everyone (not just those with IEPs and 504 plans), what real-life experiences look like in practice, and what others can do to take us out of the status quo.

Financial literacy is an essential part of every child’s education, but very few schools are actually teaching this. Kids need to know the value of compound interest and the negative effects of debt so they’re empowered to build a successful future.

This week on the podcast, I’m talking to Brian Curcio of Rapunzl Investing about investing and building generational wealth. He talks about making financial literacy attainable, supporting teachers, and engaging students in project-based learning.

Our youth shouldn’t have to wait until they’re out of school to learn how to be financially literate; it’s important that we start now. In the classroom.

Let's equip the next generation with the knowledge and skills they need for financial success.

How did you learn how to balance your checkbook? Save for retirement? Start an investment account?

This isn’t something I personally learned in school. In fact, I still sometimes wonder if I’m doing it all right. Especially when it comes to investing.

We don’t teach our kids financial literacy early enough. And even if we do, few schools offer tools in a real world environment.

It’s about time we changed that and brought financial literacy into the classroom, for all students.

While test prep and college admissions receive significant attention and investment in the US, the focus on student success often takes a back seat. 💰 Billions of dollars are poured into the former, but what about ensuring success once students step foot on campus? This is where students really need the support, navigating the rigor of school while likely living away from home for the first time.

The skills and strategies needed to get admitted differ from those required for a thriving college experience. Let's prioritize student success throughout the entire educational journey.

What do you think of when you hear the word “intern”? For many, it might be:

Unpaid
Grunt work
Long hours
Thankless

Many organizations bring on interns so they can have them do tedious, thankless work that no one else wants to do. I hope it’s clear that this attitude is doing a huge disservice to everyone.

This week on the podcast, I’m talking to Rob Khoury of Agile Rainmakers about what internships *should* look like.

As leaders, it’s our responsibility to approach internships with dignity: to support interns in learning about the industry and doing meaningful work. Intern hosts are the next step in these young adults’ educational journey and we owe it to them to make the experience exceptional.

Rob talks about how to do just that and what both interns and hosts need to know. Tune in now!

Interns don’t come into organizations to take over the work that their managers don’t want to do, for free. They’re young adults who have living expenses and a life outside work, and they’re yearning to get a foot in their industry of choice.

Hosting companies owe it to interns to support them as much as possible, setting them up for success in the internship and the future.

This week on the podcast, we’re talking more about what this looks like. Be sure to tune in tomorrow for more!
