It's National Principals Month and LCPS has these 17 reasons to celebrate -- experienced educators who go the distance to ensure their teachers and their students succeed. It's work as tough as it is important, and those called to do it deserve our gratitude and respect. Thank you, LCPS principals.

Our monthly Principals Meeting took to new heights Tuesday when Superintendent Brent Williams, the LCPS senior staff and school principals met at the Sen. Jim Perry Aviation Center of Excellence at the Global TransPark, an impressive Lenoir Community College facility already proving to be a gateway for young people interested in joining the burgeoning aviation industry here. We used the occasion to celebrate our school leaders during National Principals Month – thanks to school board chair W.D. Anderson and members John Wiggins, Jonathan Britt and Michelle Davis for joining in the tribute – and to tour the ACE facility, a tour ably led by Andrew Luppino, associate dean of the aviation campus.

Teachers, parents and friends of LCPS are invited to an organizational meeting of the Neuse Regional Reading Council, a volunteer organization designed to support literacy and grow a love for reading. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. We hope to see you there.

The Lenoir County Board of Education will meet in regular session on Monday, October 5. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Board of Education building, 2017 W. Vernon Ave., Kinston. For interested persons unable to attend, the meeting will be streamed.

We're trending! And the direction is upward. Our students are making big gains academically, particularly in math and reading, according to recently released state test scores. A group of teachers, principals and district administrators had the chance on Wednesday to meet with -- and ask questions of -- U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy, MD, at Woodington Middle School. The congressman, who took the time to tour the school with state Sen. Bob Brinson and state Rep. Chris Humphrey, praised the work of teachers as essential and endorsed a policy of local, rather than federal, control of public education. The meeting also brought out Jonathan Britt, John Wiggins and Michelle Davis of the Lenoir County Board of Education, Lenoir County Commissioner J Mac Daughety and County Commissioner-Elect BJ Murphy.

Superintendent Brent Williams and the LCPS senior staff launched their 2026-2027 monthly tour of schools on Monday with informative stops at North Lenoir High School and Lenoir County Learning Academy. Thanks to Principals Rhonda Greene (NL) and Stephanie Smith (LCLA) for hosting and -- with the help of their administrative staff -- for the data-filled presentations about what's working at their schools and what needs work. Thanks as well to the teachers who opened their classrooms to the visitors and opened some eyes with their cutting-edge instruction.
