YAY! We did it! You did it! Your kiddos did it! A great first day got the new school year off to an amazing start, with enough smiles and excitement to turn a cloudy sky blue. And you know what? We'll all do it again tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who helped get this plane off the ground!

Please put your hands together for two members of our awesome Exceptional Children's corps, recognized at Wednesday's EC Opening Day with the department's top annual awards. Cassandra Williams of Northeast Elementary School is the 2026-2027 EC Teacher of the Year and Stephanie Jones of Southwood Elementary School is the 2026-2027 EC Teacher Assistant of the Year. Both educators exemplify the patience and love that make our EC classes so impactful. Congratulations, ladies!

From North Lenoir to Northwest, from Moss Hill to Maintenance, Superintendent Brent Williams and his leadership team are criss-crossing the county on a welcome back tour, visiting with all our schools' faculty and staff and personnel at our auxiliary sites. That's 20 stops in all Bringing the message with Superintendent Williams are Associate Superintendent Frances Herring, Assistant Superintendent Nicholas Harvey II, Finance Director Helen Ho**er and, from HR, Lynn Morris and Jennifer Sutton. Thanks to the schools and work sites for their warm welcomes and kind attention.

Northwest Elementary School Principal Christy Eubanks has earned another title. She is the 2026-2027 LCPS Principal Of the Year! The award, announced before her faculty and staff by Superintendent Brent Williams, makes Ms. Eubanks a candidate for regional and state principal of the year. Ms. Eubanks joined LCPS in1999, taught elementary school for 15 years, advanced to become a curriculum specialist and assistant principal and came to Northwest as principal in 2022. Under her leadership, Northwest has raised the bar academically and received state and national recognition.

School is in session. Not for our students, of course -- that comes August 24 -- but our teachers, administrators, bus drivers, custodians, maintenance personnel, cafeteria workers and about everyone else employed by LCPS have been in class this week in one (or more) of our professional development and orientation sessions. There's more class time to come between now and students' first day as our folks brush up and gear up for a great school year ahead.

Lenoir County Early College High Schools has generated a long list of attributes over two decades, academic excellence among them; but it might be best known for its nurturing environment. That's no small matter for the 50 freshmen who began classes there this week.

They are 15 years old and in their final year of high school, already connected to college-level classes and closing in on a two-year college degree. And they are not that different from their fellow classmates at Lenoir County Early College High School.

LCPS got its new group of Beginning Teachers off to a great start with three days or orientation, capped by a celebration luncheon Monday where Superintendent Brent Williams and other district leaders welcomed the educators. Beginning Teacher support extends well beyond this month or even this year. LCPS's three-year program includes on-site mentors, professional development and collaboration with exemplary teachers. Administrators, a Beginning Teacher Coordinator and instructional coaches partner with the new teachers and mentors and a close working relationship with North Carolina New Teacher Support, East Carolina University and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction provides additional ongoing support.

Thanks to Wayne Hardee and all the folks at Wayne Hardee Law for distributing 250 book bags (with school supplies) to students in the area at an event hosted at La Grange Elementary School on Tuesday. The line of cars was long, the smiles were wide and the vibe wasn't dampened at all by the rain.

For 30 students in LCPS's migrant program, Camp Excel provided two weeks of education and adventure in July. Focused on improving skills in reading, math, speaking and writing, the camp built its curriculum arund the theme of career exploration. At the end of each week, the elementary students took a short tour down Queen Street to discuss the many types of businesses and careers, and what they may be interested in when they grow up. Middle and high school students visited East Carolina University, where they toured the campus and investigated different fields of study.
