I want to remind you of the Heirs Property or "Tangled Title" workshop on Monday, October 12th at the WVU Reedsville Farm classroom.
"Heirs Property" is what we call property that becomes in a state of limbo when someone dies without clear instructions or a will. Their real estate is inherited by their children or next of kin equally. All heirs have the same rights and access to the piece of property, meaning it cannot be sold, used as loan collateral, put into conservation easements, and is ineligible for most USDA programs, among many other complications. This becomes even more entangled when one of those heirs dies- their share of the real estate is then passed to THEIR children or next of kin equally. There are pieces of property in WV that have over 100 owners, essentially locking the property up so it can't be used or sold until each heir is tracked down and signs. Preston County itself has over 400 land tracts that are considered "heirs property."
Jesse Richardson from the WVU College of Law will walk us through how to prevent these land ownership issues. He will also discuss your options if you are currently in one of these situations. You do not need to be a farmer to attend; this issue affects anyone who owns real estate.
Dinner will be provided that evening, I ask that you call the Preston County Extension Office (304-329-1391) by Friday Oct 9th to let me know you're coming. Our meeting will begin at 6:00pm! I hope to see you there!
