“Yes, axolotls can regenerate… but they shouldn’t have to.” 💔

We wanted to reshare our guide on what to look for when purchasing an axolotl!

We’ve been seeing more and more new breeders entering the hobby, and while we absolutely support people wanting to learn and grow, it’s so important to do your research before buying or breeding axolotls. Ethical and responsible husbandry should always come first.

Lately, we’ve noticed far too many axolotls being sold with nipped gills, missing toes, feet, or even entire limbs. While axolotls have the incredible ability to regenerate, that doesn’t mean injuries caused by overcrowding, poor housing, or inadequate feeding should be considered normal or acceptable.

Now, to be fair, accidental nips can happen. Even with proper care, young axolotls may occasionally nip at one another, especially during feeding. A single missing toe or a small nip isn’t necessarily a sign of poor husbandry. However, if you notice that more than half of a breeder’s axolotls are missing limbs, have severely damaged gills, or show repeated preventable injuries, that’s a major red flag and may indicate larger husbandry issues.

Before purchasing an axolotl, take a little time to research the breeder. A reputable breeder should be happy to answer your questions and provide recent photos or videos of the exact axolotl you’re interested in so you can see its current condition.

Healthy axolotls should leave for their new homes looking healthy, well-fed, and free from preventable injuries. ❤️

Big momma wasnt done! For those wondering.... she laid a total of 657 eggies! This is her first clutch and she did so good!
