Who can supervise my Hospital Observation Hours?

Hospital Observation Hours must be completed under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician. The purpose of the observation experience is to help prospective students understand the roles of veterinarians and veterinary technicians in animal care and to provide an opportunity to ask about career expectations. Understanding these things can help a student choose an educational path best suited to meet their future career goals.

Say hello to Jack and Sol, our red-footed tortoises, for this week’s Reptile Spotlight! These tortoises are long-lived and incredibly interesting. Jack, the larger male, loves meals and a good hose shower. Sol, the smaller female, is becoming more independent and is making her own way through our new tortoise yard. Both use head signals to identify one another and can live for over 50 years! 🐢🐢🐢

What am I expected to do during my Hospital Observation Hours? Observe!

Applicants are expected to watch the veterinary team and identify their roles in patient care. Observing common procedures gives prospective students a view into their future career responsibilities. It's a great idea for students to talk with the teams about their career expectations - each role has a different knowledge and skill set. And as always, ask questions! The observation experience is to help prospective students determine if a career as a veterinary technician is what they want to pursue. Hands-on experience comes after responsible training, for the safety of patients and people.

It’s time to meet the next member of our reptile crew! Say hello to Parkay the corn snake. Corn snakes get their name from hunting for mice in old buildings where corn was stored. When scared, they may quickly shake their tail against a leaf, imitating a rattlesnake! His favorite things include burrowing around in his enclosure and hanging out with students. These are courses that must be completed or in progress at the time of application. They provide background knowledge needed to be successful in learning veterinary medicine or are general education requirements for completion of a bachelor degree.
