South Texas Has Something to Say—and the World Is Listening.

EDLD graduate Dr. Diana P. Luna and EDLD faculty member Dr. Jeffery Chernosky presented their research at the InSITE 2026 International Informing Science + IT Education Conference in San Jose, California.

Their refereed study, Faculty Perceptions of Hispanic-Serving Institutions External Funding: New Faculty Motivations and Challenges in South Texas Higher Education, brings the experiences of South Texas higher education into an international scholarly conversation.

And the journey continues. Dr. Luna is now moving this work toward a full international publication.

For our current doctoral students—and those considering the journey—this is an important reminder: the dissertation does not have to be the end of your research. It can be the beginning.

Your research can become presentations. Your ideas can become publications. And our South Texas stories can reach audiences far beyond South Texas.

🎓 **CEHP Faculty & Alumni Spotlight!**

Dr. Olivia P. Modesto and recent TAMUK graduate **Valerie Ramirez, M.S. Early Childhood Education**, represented the College of Education & Human Performance at the **Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) National Conference** in Seattle, Washington, on July 20!

Their presentation, **“Developing Pre-Service Teachers’ Resilience as an Act of Mindful Teaching,”** explored current research on preservice teacher resilience and shared evidence-based, practical strategies for supporting teacher candidates’ social-emotional and academic needs.

Valerie graduated from TAMUK this past May and serves as an **Early Childhood Education Mentor and Coach with Region 20 Education Service Center** in the San Antonio area.

We are proud to see our faculty and graduates contributing to important conversations that help prepare and support the next generation of educators! 💙💛

🎓✨CONGRAULTATIONS to DR. ELOY GAMEZ! He has officially earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership ✨🎓

Under the guidance of his dissertation chair, Dr. Angela M. Gibson, and committee members Dr. Daniella Varela, Dr. Hector Vasquez, Dr. Jeffery Chernosky, and Dr. Rosalind Alderman, Dr. Gamez successfully defended his dissertation, which examined the perceptions of student veterans at a four-year institution of higher education in South Texas regarding the transitional barriers they face when entering higher education. His research highlights the significance of reducing barriers and creating supports to promote the transition of former active military members to the role of student in higher education and foster a successful integration into academic success and college life.

As the Military & Veteran Resource Center Director here at TAMUK, Dr. Gamez continues his commitment to military-serving and veteran students, developing and integrating pathways to reduce barriers, develop resources and supports for students, promote academic achievement, and further the success of those moving from service to study.

CONGRAULTATIONS, DR. NORA SMITH!!!

Under the guidance of her dissertation chair, Dr. Angela M. Gibson, and committee members Dr. Lori Kupczynski, Dr. Don Jones, and Dr. Linda Villarreal, Dr. Smith successfully defended her dissertation, which examined middle school teachers' perceptions of behavior interventions for students diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Her research underscores the need for a better understanding of ADHD behaviors and the importance of positive student-teacher relationships in implementing behavioral interventions to support student learning and success.

As an Assistant Principal in public school education, Dr. Smith promotes opportunities for educators through ongoing professional development and early awareness of students to better support their academic and behavioral needs. Dr. Smith's research provides valuable insights to strengthen effective interventions, promote engaging learning environments, improve collaboration amongst educators, and foster positive school communities.

CONGRATULATIONS, DR. CATHERINE SALAZAR!!!

Dr. Salazar successfully defended her dissertation under the guidance of her dissertation chair, Dr. Angela M. Gibson, and committee members Dr. Lori Kupczynski, Dr. Don Jones, and Dr. Linda Villarreal.

Her dissertation examined the perceptions of the Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) on job satisfaction and teacher retention.

With over 24 years of experience in public education, including 13 years as a special education teacher and 10 years as a campus administrator, Dr. Salazar currently serves as an elementary school principal in Texas.

Results from the study strengthen her beliefs that educators need to feel valued, supportive, and empowered to create a thriving learning environment for all students. The findings from Dr. Salazar's research provides great insight for school leaders and policymakers seeking to strengthen teacher retention, job satisfaction, and school stability.

Congratulations to Dr. Christin Nix on an incredible achievement!

Dr. Christin Nix has officially earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University–Kingsville!

With 6 years of early childhood experience, 12 years of teaching experience, and 7 years in school administration, Dr. Nix has dedicated her career to serving students, supporting educators, and strengthening school communities.

Her dissertation, Perceptions of Resiliency from Principals in PK–12 Schools in Texas, explores how principals perceive resilience and the factors that contribute to effective leadership in today's schools. Her research provides valuable insights that can help strengthen school leadership across the state.

🎓✨ CONGRATULATIONS, DR. CLARISSA MARTINEZ! ✨🎓

Dr. Martinez has successfully defended her dissertation, which examined whether participation in student success coaching is associated with shorter degree completion times for transfer students navigating academic, institutional, and transitional barriers. Her research underscores the importance of integrating coaching with academic advising, degree planning, transfer credit review, and culturally responsive support, while advancing research on transfer student persistence, educational equity, and timely degree completion.

Under the guidance of her dissertation chair, Dr. Kelly S. Hall, and committee members Dr. Don Jones, Dr. Daniella Varela and Dr. Stan Hodges.

As Assistant Dean for Student Success, Dr. Martinez remains committed to strengthening coordinated support systems that reduce barriers, promote degree completion, and help students thrive. We look forward to seeing her research inform future higher education policies and practices.
