Before you ask a chatbot… ask a real plant person! Our Master Gardener volunteers are trained through University of Rhode Island research and work directly with URI Cooperative Extension plant and soil scientists, so the answer you get is backed by science, not a search engine. Every question gets a real look from someone who knows Rhode Island soil, pests, and plant disease inside and out. Send us your photos and questions: it's free, it's local, and it's actually researched. [email protected]

"The garden has done extremely well for its first season. We have had fun comparing our gardens and what has done well and what is struggling. We donate produce to the North Kingstown Food Pantry twice/week. Members of the Wellness Center and patients at the attached Physical Therapy Practice next door love the garden and often stop to chat about it. I already have a waiting list of gardeners for next year. A friend built and donated a large bird house for the garden, one of the gardeners built a 'bug hotel' and someone else donated a 'Little Free Library' which we installed on site."- Ocean State Community Wellness /Community Garden in North Kingstown, RI

Can you spot poison ivy? It's not always obvious! URI professor Michelle Peach tells us poison ivy shows up in different forms: as a low grower under trees, or as a hairy-looking vine climbing up them. Her go-to reminders: "leaves of three, let it be" and "don't be a dope and touch a hairy rope."

This 570-square-foot community garden at East Smithfield Public Library started almost entirely from seeds distributed through URI Master Gardener Program's free seed program and Ocean State Job Lot — 95% of what's growing here came from those packets. The produce goes straight to the library's food pantry, with extras shared across the community!

Fall broccoli often produces some of Rhode Island's best heads, thanks to those cool September and October temps that build dense, sweet curds. Not sure what else should be going in right now? Is your community currently under outdoor watering restrictions? This is a good time to assess which areas of your garden are struggling and begin planning for a more water-wise landscape.

When conditions are appropriate for planting, consider choosing Rhode Island native plants that are both drought tolerant and beneficial for pollinators. Our searchable RI Native Plant Guide lets you filter plants by drought tolerance, pollinator habitat, sunlight, plant type, and other characteristics to find the right plants for your landscape.

Explore the RI Native Plant Guide: https://web.uri.edu/rinativeplants/
Before watering or planting, check and follow the current restrictions in your community. Once restrictions are lifted, spring and fall are generally the best times to plant.
