A little Friday flashback to R&F's origin story.

R&F Handmade Paints was founded in 1988 by artist and paintmaker Richard Frumess who began manufacturing encaustic paint. In the mid 90s we expanded to produce R&F Pigment Sticks® and in 2025 we added R&F Drawing Oils™ to our product line.

Our formulas are complex and our manufacturing is labor-intensive, handmade in small batches, carefully milled and molded.

Nearly 40 years later, we remain committed to producing the highest quality paints with materials meticulously sourced from around the world.

Enjoy. Keep painting.

Cerulean Grey Drawing Oils™ on the production line this morning at R&F Handmade Paints.

Taking inspiration from our Pigment Sticks®, R&F Drawing Oils™ offer a smooth & portable drawing experience with a harder formulation (less oil, more wax).

Unlike oil pastels, crayons, or chalk, R&F Drawing Oils™ dry to form a permanent, protective oil film. No need for fixative.

You can learn more about working with Drawing Oils on our website. Link in profile.

Keep painting.

Celebrating a couple of anniversaries over here.

Two years ago we repackaged all of our 38ml Pigment Sticks® in recyclable paper cartons, doing away with single use plastics.

Last year on this date we expanded our encaustic and Pigment Stick® paint lines with the launch of our wildly popular Drawing Oils™.

Enjoy. Keep painting.
