You are invited to attend the Dr. Rose Butler Browne Women of Color Conference on Friday, October 17, 2025. While the conference was originally developed to support women of color, its purpose has grown to engage the entire campus community in building a culture of support, equity, and advocacy. We encourage all students, faculty, staff, and allies to join us in fostering a space where women of color can thrive. This year’s conference will feature a dynamic keynote address titled "Next Man Up: Masculinity in A Changing World" by Byron Hurt—an award-winning filmmaker, educator, and national voice in gender violence prevention and social justice. Byron currently teaches at SUNY–Old Westbury in the American Studies/Communications Department and has served as a filmmaker-in-residence at American University. In addition to the keynote, the conference will include:

A panel of accomplished professional women who are turning advocacy into action through legislation, the legal system, and nonprofit work—offering stories, strategies, and inspiration for those looking to create real impact.

A Student Leadership Panel, where students will share their personal experiences at URI, how they hope their legacy will continue, and how they plan to carry these lessons into their next steps after college. I'm excited to be a part of this panel and to represent the voice of students on our journey toward change.

To close out the day, we’ll feature a powerful conversation between Kristy Embrack Searles and her husband, Duran Searles, as they reflect on how they partner in allyship and use their shared experiences to work toward social justice within their family and broader community.

The University of Rhode Island will host its annual Dr. Rose Butler Browne Leadership and Mentoring Program Women of Color Conference on Saturday, March 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Avedisian Hall, 7 Greenhouse Road, Kingston.

The annual program celebrates the achievements and contributions of women of color in various fields throughout Rhode Island.

This year’s conference will feature Congressman Gabe Amo, who represents Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District, and URI alumna Monda Raquel Webb ’90, an award-winning author and filmmaker.

For your general knowledge, please arrive to be seated by 8:50am as the town hall with Congressman Amo begins sharply at 9:00 am. After the town hall we will have participants pickup their registration and be welcomed to the conference. There will be a morning panel followed by lunch and then an afternoon panel and our closing keynote speaker.

The Women's Center and Gender & Sexuality Centers are in collaboration to present The Va**na Monologues at URI on Friday, Feb. 28 (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, March 1 (5:30 p.m.), in Edwards Hall; the doors open half an hour before each show. The show is open to guests 18+ or with a parent and is open to the public. Entry cost is $5 students, $8 faculty/staff, and $15 general public. Register at this link
