The New School for Music Study

The New School for Music Study Transforming lives through excellence in piano study for over 60 years. NSMS offers piano lessons and classes to its students from the greater Princeton area.

The New School for Music Study (NSMS) is nationally known for providing musical instruction at the piano, rigorous training for teachers, and for conducting research into effective teaching. It was founded in 1960 by Frances Clark (1905-1998) and Louise Goss, two nationally respected piano pedagogues, and is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization as a division of the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard P

edagogy. The school serves as a model training institution for university and preparatory departments across the country. NSMS maintains an annual enrollment of 250 children and adults, at all ages and stages. The programs offered to the greater Princeton community include: elementary lessons for young beginners, intermediate/advanced lessons for children with prior training, lessons for adults at all levels, classes for Kindergartners, and the Program for Excellence in Piano Study (an accelerated program of study for gifted children). All programs of study include individual lessons and group lessons with the school’s esteemed faculty. All members of the faculty are highly-educated and experienced pianists and pedagogues. A yearly faculty recital series is programmed in which four concerts are presented throughout the year. Many from among the faculty have published writings on piano and pedagogy and have presented at local, state, and national conferences.

📍 KINGSTON

We’re back for Year Two.

Following a wonderful first year, we are pleased to announce the 2026–2027 Piano Teacher Engagement Series—a year of learning, conversation, and connection for our piano teaching community.

This year’s series is dedicated to Marvin Blickenstaff, whose teaching and mentorship have influenced generations of piano educators.

Beginning October 7, we’ll welcome an exceptional group of pedagogues and educators for 15 sessions and two community gatherings, exploring topics ranging from musical interpretation and student agency to repertoire, wellness, creativity, technology, and healthy technique.

We are especially grateful to the New Jersey piano teaching community and beyond that embraced this initiative in its first year. We look forward to welcoming you back—and to welcoming many new colleagues into the conversation.

Exciting improvements are underway at NSMS!

Work has begun on our parking lot, improved lighting, additional safety enhancements, and other updates throughout the school—all part of a $40,000 investment in creating an even better experience for our students, families, faculty, and community.

Thanks to generous lead support from the Marvin Blickenstaff Teaching Excellence Fund, this important work is already underway. Now, we’re inviting our community to help us reach our goal of raising $20,000 by August 31.

Every gift helps us care for the place where our students learn, our faculty teach, and our community comes together through music.

Will you help us reach $20,000?

With Gratitude and Best Wishes to Nathaniel! ✨

This past year, Nathaniel has been a dedicated member of the NSMS Postgraduate Teaching Program. We are grateful for his curiosity and tireless desire to learn, and for the energy he shared with students and colleagues throughout the year.

As Nathaniel begins doctoral studies at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC), we celebrate this next chapter and thank him for all he has contributed to the NSMS community, The Frances Clark Center, and the broader piano teaching community. We look forward to following his continued growth as a teacher and musician.
