When it comes to nor'easters, its very common to have huge differences in snow amounts over short distances. Last week's NYC/Long Island blizzard dropped any where from 2 to 10 inches of snow across Ulster County with over a foot just to our south. But that large range is nothing compared to the blizzard of March 2, 2018. Eight years ago, a powerful nor'easter occurred when valley temperatures were just barely above freezing. The result was anywhere from 0 to 20 inches of snow across Ulster County with less than an inch in Kingston and 40 inches of snow further upstate! The National Weather Service continues the blizzard warning for the Kingston area and continues to forecast 12-18 inches, but I'm going to be very honest with you - this storm could very well be somewhat of a bust for the Kingston area. Some of the new data coming in over the past few hours has indicated that the storm's heavy snow bands may stop just before reaching Ulster County. If this happens, Kingston would end up with just a light-to-moderate snowfall and possibly struggle to reach even 6 inches. We'll see what happens, but this is a classic concern with most nor'easters and the low end scenario would not be at all surprising.

Ulster and Dutchess counties -including Kingston and Poughkeepsie - are now under a Blizzard Warning: wx4.us/wvkBYv According to the National Weather Service, the combination of snow and wind will make travel difficult to impossible overnight through Monday morning.... conditions will deteriorate after 7PM tonight. This is our first Blizzard Warning in 9 years.

For very windy storms like this, blowing and drifting snow can make it very difficult to get a single accurate measurement. It's best to take several measurements from the same general area (ex: different parts of your yard or driveway) and then average them.

Our second double-digit storm in the past month begins today.

⏰ Timing: Light snow possible this afternoon, becoming steady by 7PM. Heavy snow and very windy between 7PM today and 12PM Monday. Storm ends by about 4PM Monday.

💥 Impacts: Very difficult to potentially impossible travel across the region tonight and Monday morning. Winds over 40 mph at times will make visibility and roads even worse than if it was just heavy snow alone. Some tree damage and power outages are expected from winds.

⚠️ Alerts: Winter Storm Warning from Kingston/Poughkeepsie to Albany from 1PM today to 7PM Monday for 10-20 inches of snow: tinyurl.com/2p2rfs9p. Blizzard Warnings for all areas south of Poughkeepsie, including Newburgh.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch from 7AM Sunday to 6PM Monday; Snow accumulation of 6 to 12 inches is currently likely with the worst conditions likely between 7PM Sunday and 12PM Monday. Expect the Winter Storm Watch to be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning later today or tonight. Don't want to get premature, but smells like a four-day weekend for you school-going folk 😉

A nor’easter will develop off the mid-Atlantic coast on Sunday and track off the coast through Monday while rapidly intensifying. There is the potential for heavy snowfall accumulations (greater than 7 inches) mainly for areas south and east of Albany where a Winter Storm Watch is in effect. There remains some uncertainty on the track of this storm and how far inland snowfall reaches which would impact overall snowfall totals.

⚠️ The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch.

🧠 Things to know: Expect a sudden increase in winds Saturday morning and a brief period of snow showers or squalls, followed by rapidly falling temperatures. An arctic cold front will move through between 5AM and 10AM Saturday. The cold front will bring a sudden and prolonged increase in winds and will initially be accompanied by snow showers and possibly heavier squalls. Windchills will begin to feel below zero by late Saturday morning, and drop to near -20°F by Sunday morning (colder in some areas). For this reason, the US National Weather Service Albany NY has issued and "Extreme Cold Watch" from 6PM Saturday through 1PM Sunday. The Watch includes all of Ulster and Dutchess counties and all parts of the state to our north, including everywhere from Albany to Buffalo.

❓What does an "Extreme Cold Watch" mean?
The Watch means that there is at least a 50% chance of windchills reaching -20°F or colder. There is the potential for windchills to reach -20°F to -35°F across much of eastern NY. The last time an "Extreme Cold Watch" was issued for the Kingston and Poughkeepsie areas was in February 2023 (they were called "Windchill Watches" then).

➡️ Alert changes to expect:
By Friday night, the Extreme Cold Watch will either be converted to a "Cold Weather Advisory" or an "Extreme Cold Warning". The Advisory is issued when temperatures are only expected to get as low as -10°F to -20°F; the Warning is issued when temperatures are expected to fall below -20°F. The last time a "Cold Weather Advisory" was issued was last week; the last time an "Extreme Cold Warning" (previously called "Windchilll Warning") was issued for our area was exactly 10 years ago.

💪 What should I do?
- Monitor the latest forecasts and alerts.
- Prepare now for extremely cold temperatures this weekend.
- Have a back-up plan incase you lose electricity or heating.
- Avoid outdoor going outdoors, especially Saturday PM / Sunday AM.
- Check on friends and family; make sure they have back-up plans.
