URI Cooperative Extension It emphasizes taking knowledge gained through research and education and bringing it directly to the people to create positive changes.

Cooperative Extension provides non-formal education and learning opportunities to people throughout the United States — to farmers and other residents of rural communities as well as to people living in urban areas. All universities engage in research and teaching, but the nation’s more than 100 land-grant colleges and universities have a third, critical mission — extension. The University of Rhode Island is one of these land-grant institutions, and through Cooperative Extension in RI, we bring vital, practical information to agricultural producers, small business owners,communities, consumers, families, and young people. We pride ourselves on our role in translating science for practical application, and are always looking to identify emerging research questions to which we find answers and encourage application of science and technology to improve agricultural, environmental, economic and social conditions.

As a Senior Extension Fellow in the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Director’s Office, URI student Cailey Mingolla works with the climate policy team on data collection, report writing, outreach, and communicating climate challenges and solutions to Rhode Island audiences.

She also attends meetings of the RI Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council and its advisory boards.

“It’s one thing to read about the challenges associated with environmental policy change,” she says. “It’s another to observe it in real time and be a part of some of those discussions.”

Her placement comes through the URI Cooperative Extension Environmental Fellows Program, a year-long, paid experience that pairs students with public- and private-sector mentors on real projects.

Get your hands dirty on a farm? Create social media content? Put your engineering skills to work? Explore wildlife, analyze data or connect with communities?

The 2027 URI Extension Fellowships offer paid opportunities through our Agriculture & Food Systems Fellows Program, Environmental Management Fellows Program and Energy Fellows Program.

And those focus areas need more than one kind of expertise! Mentors are looking for skills ranging from Excel, economics and engineering to writing, graphic design, youth education and multilingual communication.

Undergraduate and graduate students from ALL majors are encouraged to apply.

Ryan is a senior studying Marine Affairs and a 2026 Environmental Management Fellow working with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), where he supports environmental education efforts by teaching high school interns about environmental topics, organizing field trips, and connecting students with opportunities to explore careers in the environmental field. He works to help inspire the next generation of environmental professionals and advocates. In his free time, he enjoys staying active, spending time outdoors, being with friends, and watching sports.

Anaya is a sophomore studying Marine Biology and Marine Affairs and a 2026 Energy Fellow, working with the URI Cooperative Extension Energy Literacy Initiative, where she develops energy navigator training, creates outreach materials, and supports projects that help Rhode Islanders access weatherization programs and clean energy resources. In her free time, Anaya enjoys playing sand volleyball on campus during the summer and skiing in the winter, while doing her best not to fall.
