New York Historical Fencing Association The New York Historical Fencing Association is a school of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). We have branches in Kingston, NY and Manhattan.

We teach the Kunst des Fechtens (arts of fighting) of medieval Germany as described in the various surviving manuscripts of the Liechtenauer tradition. Students learn how to fight with the medieval longsword, period grappling techniques and other weapons of the system.

Fechtschule New York was held this weekend in beautiful upstate to New York. Congratulations to the winners of the tournaments! The winners: Triathlon ------------ 1st Place, Event Champion:...

Why you should go to Fecthschule New York. First, it's extremely inexpensive. $50-$75 + gas and food. There is no 3 day event that even comes close in terms of price, many are approaching or have crossed the $200 boundary.

Second, informal workshops. Many local (and not so local) instructors will be in attendance, and what sort of workshops they run in the ample informal time will be up to them, and you. Want help with your winding? Or your cutting? Or your sense of distance? Find your favorite instructor and ask. If you're an instructor and you already know what sort of class or workshop you want to run, you can let me know ahead of time and I'll make it official. Who is invited to teach at Fechtschule New York? Everyone who teaches.

Third, camping. If you've never camped at an event you don't know what you're missing. Living in a "tent city" in a beautiful location with some of your favorite HEMA people is a ton of fun. Bring a cooler full of meat and BBQ, or boil weird soup in my cauldron (don't touch my chickens on pain of death). Drink beer under a brilliant night sky, sit by a fire, go walk in the woods and get eaten by a bear.

Fourth, experimentation and innovation. You have the time, you have the space, you have the people. Make it happen. Ever wanted to try the man vs. woman duel in Talhoffer where the man is in a hole up to his waist, but you never had a hole? Come to Fechtschule New York, dig a hole!

Fifth, local spectators. This is a touristy area and early June is prime tourist season. Also, for the locals, this will be the most exciting thing to ever happen in their town. There will probably be reporters from local papers.

Finally, this is an event like no other. Casual, informal, but professionally run by experienced tournament fighters with full transparency. Three days long, but ridiculously cheap. Local, but with out of state and even out of region attendees. A true HEMA vacation away from civilization and the hectic pace of modern life. No traffic, crowds or hassle. Most importantly, I want everyone to feel welcome, no matter who you are, what group you're with or what issues you may have had with others in the past. Come be a part of Fechtschule New York!
